Matlock Renewed for Season 2 on CBS Ahead of Full Season 1 Debut

As a long-time television enthusiast who has seen countless shows come and go, I must say that the renewal of Matlock for a second season is truly a breath of fresh air. Having grown up watching Andy Griffith as Matlock, it’s a delight to see Kathy Bates take on the iconic role with her own unique twist.

CBS is eager to tackle more unsolved cases with Madeline “Matty” Matlock and her team at Jacobson & Moore. Since its debut, the show has consistently drawn a large audience for the network and received positive critical feedback. As a result, it’s been confirmed that the series will continue, airing during the 2025-2026 television season.

By the set deadline, the show “Matlock” has been granted another season, making it one of the initial renewals for this television season. This news isn’t unexpected considering the positive response “Matlock” has garnered since its debut episode. On September 22nd, a preview of the series was shown to viewers, which attracted an impressive 7.73 million viewers, making it CBS’ largest audience for a non-post-Super Bowl series premiere in over five and a half years. Given the current state of network TV and the increasing challenges in creating a hit amidst the rising popularity of cable TV and streaming platforms, this is quite an achievement.

The vote of confidence for Season 2 also had to do with its ratings for its official time slot premiere on Oct. 17. Giving viewers enough time to sample the sneak peek episode via DVR playback and streaming allowed the second episode to pull in a solid 6.38 million viewers, showing growth of 44 percent from the same-day average in that time period last season. The episode is bound to see growth once days of cross-platform viewing are factored in, because the sneak peek grew to 10.67 million viewers after three days of cross-platform viewing.

As a captivated movie critic, I can attest that the alluring charm of Matlock unfolded swiftly from its premiere, largely due to an unexpected plot twist unveiled in the final scenes of the debut episode. This shocking revelation left even the most seasoned critics and viewers spellbound, hinting that this revamped series was steering clear of mere repetition of its predecessor, which graced our screens from 1986 to 1995.

The revamped Matlock series, ingeniously conceptualized by Jennie Snyder Urman with an unexpected plot twist, left us thrilled from the very first episode, expertly executed by the remarkable Kathy Bates. The audience response and praise it has received have been phenomenal. We’re eager to dive into a second season!

In the fresh take on Matlock, the storyline is set within a world that shares similarities with the original show, where Andy Griffith portrayed the main character. The character Madeline Kingston (previously Bates) is a prosperous lawyer who resumes her legal career for a deeply emotional cause. Her daughter Ellie was a fan of the original series and Kingston aims to bring down Jacobson & Moore, a law firm she suspects played a role in an opioid crisis that claimed Ellie’s life. To achieve this goal, Kingston disguises herself as “Matty Matlock,” a vulnerable widow, and assists her new coworkers in handling difficult cases to earn their trust and uncover the truth behind Ellie’s demise. The series also features Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, David Del Rio, and Leah Lewis among its cast members.

The television series “Matlock” has been praised as one of the top-rated new shows this fall, earning a 95% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes with critics saying, “It’s a wrap – this updated Matlock is a hit thanks to Kathy Bates’ consistent performance and the innovative twist it brings to the classic series.” Bates confessed that she was considering quitting acting before being offered the role in “Matlock”. Contrary to earlier reports suggesting her semi-retirement, she clarified her stance and shared her enjoyment of working on the show, hoping that the series continues for a long time.
