Kathy Bates’ revamped version of Matlock, while perhaps an unusual take, goes beyond merely reimagining the classic Andy Griffith-led show. It offers gripping episodes, a seemingly endless supply, and boasts a star-studded cast, with none other than Kathy Bates taking the helm. Joining her in the cast is Jason Ritter, who despite his roles in The Accused and other projects, was unknown to one of his co-stars, even given his famous father’s reputation.
Jason Ritter, son of the late John Ritter, bears a resemblance and shares the same last name, but has established his own success. It’s intriguing that not all of his co-stars were privy to his talented lineage or have viewed some of his work. In fact, Skye P. Marshall, his on-screen spouse, confessed to Us Weekly that she wasn’t familiar with him before they began their script readings.
As a film enthusiast, I must confess, prior to our chemistry read for the role of Julian, I wasn’t familiar with Jason Ritter. This is something I’ve kept to myself. Growing up, I was a huge fan of his father, John Ritter. It wasn’t until after our Zoom meeting that it clicked – yes, I recognized Jason’s face but didn’t connect it with him until later.
It’s quite surprising to learn that Skye P. Marshall wasn’t aware of her colleague’s identity and his family link, yet she seemed to recognize his face. Interestingly, when they read together, Marshall observed the distinct way Jason Ritter portrayed his character, Julian. According to Skye’s comments, it appears her co-star gave a dedicated performance, despite his connections in the entertainment industry.
Instead of portraying Julian as a character born into wealth with a rich father and a beautiful wife, he played from a deeply authentic and genuine perspective – that of an individual striving for independence. His ambition was to carve out his own identity and make a name for himself distinctly. In our chemistry read, I remember one of my lines addressed to him was, “You’re correct, nepotism wasn’t involved in my hiring process.
The debate over “nepo babies” in Hollywood has been ongoing, but despite being the son of a well-known actor, Jason Ritter has managed to establish his unique identity. Interestingly, Skye P. Marshall not knowing him before may have worked to his advantage, as she couldn’t help but heap praise on him following their reading together. In her own words, Marshall described their initial chemistry read as follows:
The way Jason handled that bullet and suppressed his feelings struck me as incredibly authentic, given that I was the one receiving it. That’s why when our Zoom call ended, I found myself exclaiming, “Wow, that’s Jason Ritter!” I felt a bit foolish after that, but I’m genuinely thrilled to have had that genuine interaction and connection with him, without any preconceived notions about him.
Ever since the ’90s, I’ve been proudly following Jason Ritter’s journey in the entertainment industry, a path that not only honors his father’s legacy but also carves out a unique niche for himself. Even after his father’s passing in 2003, Ritter has continued to shine brightly. Recently, the revival of ‘Matlock’ for a second season is a testament to his enduring talent. Though there are some lingering criticisms about ‘Matlock’, its first season performance has been quite commendable. If this momentum continues, I have no doubts that Ritter and his fellow cast members will become household names.
While Matlock keeps setting new milestones, I can’t wait to find out more about the characters as this season unfolds and beyond. There might be more surprises in store, and it’s tough to predict what will transpire, particularly between Ritter and Marshall’s characters. Here’s to hoping their tales remain engaging since they are well acquainted with each other on and off screen.
