Matlock’s Shocking Gamble: One Word That Could Change Everything!

Attention: Contents may contain spoilers for the 12th episode of Matlock’s first season, titled “This is That Moment.” If you haven’t caught up yet, consider yourself forewarned.

If Matlock seems poised to shatter my emotions, I’m not sure I’ll be able to focus on anything else in the 2025 TV lineup, given how deeply Kathy Bates’ compelling portrayal of her title character in CBS’ acclaimed legal drama has touched us. However, after the climax of the last episode, “This is That Moment,” left a question hanging that resonated profoundly with the core theme of the series, I must admit I’m concerned about what lies ahead.

Edwin ‘Sometimes’ Blames Madeline For Their Daughter Ellie’s Death

This week, I was privy to numerous flashbacks that delved into Madeline’s (Kathy Bates) and her husband Edwin’s (Sam Anderson) shared past. Witnessing Matty re-experience their bitter custody battle with their late daughter Ellie (Marnee Carpenter), culminating in the last moment she saw her before her demise, had already left us teetering on an emotional cliff edge.

In this week’s episode of Matlock, the final scene tipped things into a whirlwind when Ms. Kingston questioned her husband about whether he held her responsible for their daughter’s demise. The simple response of “Sometimes!” set off a cascade of emotions. As Edwin was confronted with whether Ellie would still be alive if they hadn’t contested custody of Alfie, his earlier deception of concealing an email implicating him as a possible father took a backseat in significance.

Matlock’s Welbrexa Mystery Is Now Even More Personal

It’s uncertain if Madeline Kingston and her husband will split up, but it appears that Matlock is introducing this as an intriguing element for dramatic purposes. Exploring the past of our central family, especially during a difficult custody battle involving a divorcing couple, was a brilliant move, as it creates an interesting contrast with Matty’s responsibilities.

After realizing that she had mishandled the Ellie situation earlier, Ms. Matlock managed to convince a worried mother, Paloma Deleon (Greta Quispe), not to hide in Jacobson Moore’s file room with her son, whom she was afraid of losing. In this instance, Ms. Matlock successfully prevented a potentially disastrous outcome, yet this victory served as a reminder of her past mistakes.

As this series started back in the fall, the Kingston family was already dealing with significant pressure as they attempted to uncover Jacobson Moore’s suspected wrongdoing. However, now that we’ve seen Ellie in the past through flashbacks and considering the growing tension between Madeline and Edwin, the reasons for their actions have grown even more deeply personal.

Through the captivating vocal feats displayed by Matlock, it’s clear that there’s a wealth of intense Kathy Bates performances and the constant ups-and-downs of Leah Lewis’ character Sarah, scaling new heights. Join us next Thursday at 9 p.m. ET as Madeline Kingston and her colleagues continue their journey in “Pregame,” a title that certainly breaks away from the usual foreboding naming trend. Until then, the court is dismissed, and we can only hope that the ensuing week will bring some humor with the antics of “Shae Watch.” Yes, that nickname is sticking!
