As a gamer who has witnessed the rise of numerous digital personalities and influencers, I must admit that Matt Rife’s journey is nothing short of astonishing. From the viral TikTok crowd work to selling out arenas, it’s a tale that would make any indie gamer’s avatar dream of hitting the big leagues.
Matt Rife shows no signs of slowing down; quite the contrary, he’s gearing up for a busy year ahead. Specifically, the widely recognized, contentious comedian has already scheduled 32 performances at arenas and amphitheaters throughout North America in 2025.
Kicking off March 8 at Dallas’ American Airlines Arena, Rife launches his Stay Golden Tour – a Live Nation production. He’ll perform at the largest venues of his career, including his inaugural headline show at Madison Square Garden. This follows his ProbleMATTic World Tour where he sold more than 600,000 tickets across over 250 shows in under 48 hours back in 2023.
So far, only him and Taylor Swift have caused such a frenzy with their tours that the Ticketmaster site crashed after the announcements. It’s uncertain if tickets for Rife’s tour will trigger another crash when they go on sale later this week (November 20th for pre-sale, November 22nd for general public). We’ll have to wait and see.
To introduce his latest tour, Rife released a brief video that might not be suitable for all audiences. This clip accentuates his rebellious persona, with scenes such as him lying in bed, reading offensive comments directed at him, while seemingly engaging in an intimate act beneath the covers. When questioned earlier this year about embracing such a controversial image, he explained to The Hollywood Reporter, “I don’t care what the haters think…even if a special of mine wins an Emmy, they would still call it rubbish.
The main topic of the 1 minute and 40 second video is the rapid rise of Rife, which involved approximately 700 shows over a two-year span. At some point, he discusses the “exceptionally high” moments (significantly, the records he set during his performances) as well as the “extremely low” points (possibly, his hospitalization due to exhaustion), describing this phase of his life as “crazy.
If you haven’t noticed Rife’s meteoric rise, this 29-year-old comedian has exploded onto the scene with arena-selling popularity following his widely shared TikTok crowd work. In the two years since then, he’s accumulated over 39.4 million followers across social media and amassed more than 3 billion views worldwide. His Netflix special, Natural Selection, which started with a joke about domestic violence and garnered over 10.3 million views in its first fortnight when it premiered in 2023, also caused a stir. Immediately after that, Netflix signed him for two more specials, as well as a sitcom based on gyms and workplaces, which he plans to write and star in himself.
Just last month, I took the stage for my very first crowd work special on Netflix, titled “Lucid.” It was a historic moment as it marked Netflix’s inaugural crowd work special, and it didn’t take long for it to soar into the top 10 in a whopping 37 countries! Moving forward, I have a memoir in the works that I’ve creatively titled “Your Mom’s Gonna Love Me.” Additionally, I’m dipping my toes into the world of film with an R-rated comedy called “Rolling Loud,” co-produced by Live Nation Productions and American High. This project is slated for release in 2025. And if luck be a lady, one day I hope to collaborate with my idol, Ricky Gervais!
