As a die-hard fan of the “Scream” franchise, I must confess that Matthew Lillard‘s character, Stu Macher, has always left me with a lingering question: Is he still alive? His recent interview with Drew Barrymore only fueled my curiosity and made me reminisce about the good old days when we saw him on the big screen.
In a surprising turn of events, Matthew Lillard, who played Stu Macher in the original Scream movie, has hinted that his character might still be alive. This comes after he reconnected with his co-star Drew Barrymore on her talk show, where he emphatically stated that Stu is “definitely alive.” Despite being left for dead after a gruesome stabbing incident in the first film, Stu has yet to make an appearance in any subsequent Scream movies, although he was supposed to have a significant role in Scream 3 before unforeseen circumstances altered the course of the franchise.
On “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Lillard confirms that Stu is still living. To clarify, he has consistently maintained that Stu lives on. As far as I know, no one is turning down the chance to be involved in any future sequels or this franchise. It’s possible for Stu to continue existing within this world. He elaborates:
In the original plan for the third Scream sequel, Kevin Williamson intended to portray the character as still alive, orchestrating horrific acts from prison. However, this concept was abandoned due to the Columbine High School tragedy that occurred just before production, necessitating a complete rewrite of the storyline. So, it’s possible that in one scenario, Kevin believed the character was alive. And, in another scenario, the team behind Scream 5 and 6 also thought he was still alive.
Regarding Lillard’s possible role in the next Scream movie, it appears unlikely that he will make an unexpected comeback as Stu. “I’d be thrilled if I could be there, if that makes sense. However, Scream doesn’t necessarily require Matthew Lillard reprising his character of Stu. It’s all good. But, you know, a person can always wish for more.
How Matthew Lillard Can Return to Scream as Stu
As a die-hard fan, it seems logical that they would bring back Damon Lillard for Scream 3. It’s actually quite surprising to me that he hasn’t returned yet, given how much the franchise values its original characters, even those who have supposedly met their end (like Skeet Ulrich’s Loomis). I find it fascinating that Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Jamie Kennedy, Liev Schreiber, and others have graced multiple Scream sequels.
In other words, there are two possible ways for Lillard’s character, Stuart “Stu” Macher, to reappear in a future installment of the “Scream” series:
Lillard chuckles, admitting, ‘That’s definitely beyond my level.’ He continues, ‘I’m neutral about this. Whether it’s option A, B, or C, I don’t care. What truly matters is that I believe the fans would enjoy it immensely. They’d have a blast with it, and I think it would be entertaining. Beyond that, it’s in the hands of those above.’
