Matthew Macfadyen on Why He “Didn’t Really Enjoy” His Role as Mr. Darcy in ‘Pride & Prejudice’: “I’m Not Dishy Enough”

As a devoted fan of Matthew Macfadyen‘s acting career, I was taken aback by his recent confession during an interview with CBS Mornings that he didn’t truly relish playing Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice (2005). Though it’s hard to believe, given the iconic status of the film and his brilliant portrayal of the character.

Matthew Macfadyen is sharing his reasons for not thoroughly enjoying his portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the 2005 film “Pride & Prejudice.”

During an interview on CBS Morning Tuesday, the Emmy-winning actor reflected on the movie in which he acted alongside Keira Knightley.

He confessed, “I didn’t truly relish it. I’m sorry to admit that. there were instances when I had fun, but I wished for a deeper enjoyment. I longed for fewer concerns.”

Macfadyen expressed his initial doubts about being suited for the part of Mr. Darcy. “I thought I might not be the ideal candidate,” the actor from “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” admitted. “I wasn’t confident enough in my good looks.” However, things eventually turned out favorably.

The film earned four Oscar nominations, indeed, as the story unfolded. Meanwhile, the British thespian shared his continued thrill of being identified as Mr. Darcy in everyday life.

In the movie directed by Joe Wright, which is adapted from Jane Austen’s novel with the same title, we follow the evolving connection between Elizabeth Bennet (played by Knightley), a young woman from a countryside gentry family, and Mr. Darcy (a wealthy aristocrat from England).

Prior to landing the cherished part, Macfadyen had been treading in Colin Firth’s wake. He had previously brought Mr. Darcy to life in the 1995 television adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice.” The actor from “Succession” mentioned that they subsequently discussed their unique experiences at great length.
