Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson Return for ‘Sing’ Special Based on Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”

As a long-time fan of the Sing franchise, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming Halloween release of Sing: Thriller on Netflix! With its star-studded cast and the iconic “Thriller” theme, this short film promises to be a spooktacular treat for audiences young and old.

The Sing franchise is returning, just in time for Halloween.

On Wednesday, Netflix will be premiering the chilling short film titled “Sing: Thriller“. This production comes from Illumination and Universal Pictures. Notably, the original director of the franchise, Garth Jennings, is back, along with voice artists Matthew McConaughey (as Buster Moon), Tori Kelly (Meena), Nick Kroll (Gunter), Scarlett Johansson (Ash), Taron Egerton (Johnny) and Jennings himself (Miss Crawly).

In “Sing: Thriller,” Buster (McConaughey) and his friends perform an intricate rendition of Michael Jackson’s famous song, “Thriller,” for a Halloween bash. However, they soon discover that a strange liquid has altered the partygoers into dancing oddities.

The brief movie is inspired by the iconic music video from 1983 for the chart-topping hit “Thriller.” Rod Temperton penned both the melody and lyrics for this song that graced Jackson’s album titled similarly, which continues to hold the record as the best-selling album ever made.

In the “Thriller” movie, it was Jennings who took charge of writing and directing, while Chris Meledandri handled production duties. Dana Krupinski held an executive producing role, and Nathalie Vancauwenberghe served as co-producer.

In 2016, the movie “Sing” made its debut in cinemas and grossed over $600 million worldwide. The plot revolved around Buster’s efforts to revive his struggling theater by arranging a singing contest. A second installment was released in 2021.

In the two movies, Reese Witherspoon provided the voice for the character Rosita, but she’s one of the actors from the series who won’t be reprising their roles in the upcoming short film.

In her critique for The Hollywood Reporter, Leslie Felperin noted that with an outstanding ensemble of actors, it’s hardly unexpected that the original film Sing delights both the ears and the eyes.
