Matthew Rhys is relocating to New England and taking on the role of a mayor – in a TV show, naturally. The renowned actor from “Perry Mason” and “The Americans” will star as the lead in AppleTV+’s upcoming supernatural series, “Widow’s Bay.” This project is penned by the talented writer Katie Dippold, whose credits include films like “The Heat” and “Ghostbusters,” and 31 episodes of the legendary sitcom “Parks and Recreation.” Joining this star-studded team is director Hiro Murai, who has captivated audiences with his remarkable work on shows such as “Atlanta,” “Station Eleven,” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Anyone else allowing themselves to get a little bit excited about this one?
As reported by Deadline, the new series exhibits a distinctly mystical theme, fitting since Dippold’s recent screenplay was for Disney’s “The Haunted Mansion.” The story unfolds on an enigmatic and possibly cursed New England island, aiming to match Nantucket’s tourism opulence. However, the superstitious townsfolk, particularly the mayor (Rhys) who is skeptical of their magical convictions, could hamper this ambition. Rhys portrays Mayor Tom Loftis, a pragmatic single father compelled to handle his town’s superstitious populace while simultaneously managing the island and its financial stability.
Under Apple Studios’ guidance for the streaming platform, Dippold will take charge as showrunner and executive producer for Widow’s Bay. Additionally, Murai, Claudia Shin, Carver Karaszewski, and Rhys will serve as producers. Joanne Toll will co-executive produce alongside them.
What Has Matthew Rhys Been Up To Since ‘The Americans’ Ended?
Beyond starring in the brief revival of “Perry Mason” on HBO, Matthew Rhys has been quite active. He’s just been announced as part of the cast for Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming serial killer series titled “Silent River“, alongside John Krasinski. The Welsh actor, who is married to Keri Russell, his co-star from “Americans”, was also recently featured in the 2024 film “Saturday Night“, where he portrayed a humorous and gruff George Carlin (the host of the first episode ever of Saturday Night Live)).
Apart from his live-action roles, this actor has provided his vocal talents for numerous animated productions. For instance, he portrayed Dan Dreiberg (also known as the second Nite Owl) in the animated “Watchmen” series, voiced Figgy, an alcoholic tree, in “Tuca & Bertie,” and Emperor Belos in “The Owl House.” Additionally, he gave voice to Riley Greene in “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai,” Florid Sword and Gammon in “The Wingfeather Saga,” and an imaginary friend named Ghost in the Ryan Reynolds-led production, “IF.
Considering the cast and creators behind it, Widow’s Bay, despite its supernatural genre, appears to lean towards a comedic tone. Rhys, known for his humorous side even with his serious acting background, and Dippold famous for her witty and hilarious screenplays, combined with the offbeat humor of director/producer Murai, suggest that this series could be quite amusing. Though we’d probably watch it regardless if it turns out to be a drama, who wouldn’t appreciate a dose of laughter in their TV lineup these days?
Widow’s Bay does not yet have a release date.
