Matthieu Blazy Confirmed As Chanel's Creative Director

As a seasoned gamer who has navigated through countless virtual fashion runways and designer label landscapes, I must say that the appointment of Matthieu Blazy as Chanel’s new Artistic Director feels like a well-timed power-up in my gaming world. Having just left Bottega Veneta, this fresh talent is about to embark on an exhilarating journey with one of the most iconic fashion houses, and I can’t help but be reminded of the “Game Over” screen in my favorite games, only to realize that it’s actually a new level!

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that after six months without a Creative Director at Chanel, a fresh talent has emerged to fill the coveted role. Just hours ago, Matthieu Blazy, who was previously with Bottega Veneta, has been chosen as the new Artistic Director of Chanel. I can’t wait to see what exquisite creations he will bring to this iconic brand!

Under the helm of various fashion categories including clothing, couture, and accessories, Blazy – recently appointed to Bottega in November 2021 – is expected to present ten collections annually for Chanel. His highly-anticipated debut on the catwalk will take place during the upcoming Paris Fashion Week shows in October.

Bruno Pavlovsky, Chanel’s president of fashion, expressed great faith in Matthieu Blazy’s ability to infuse modern ideas and unique approaches into the classic Chanel brand, as reported by The New York Times. He further referred to Blazy as a “talent for the future,” emphasizing his appreciation for the brand’s history while recognizing his distinct talent for ready-to-wear clothing, silhouettes, and bag designs.

We’re really fond of it. We encourage him to experiment, explore, and make decisions based on his instincts. We aim to avoid giving off an impression that our brand lacks dynamism or progression.

I’m overjoyed and proud to become part of the esteemed Chanel family. I eagerly anticipate interacting with everyone and starting a fresh story alongside them,” said Blazy, speaking to WWD.

According to statements made by Alain Wertheimer (Chanel’s global executive chairman) and Leena Nair (Chanel’s global chief executive officer) in an interview with WWD, the 40-year-old Blazy was chosen from among the top designers in the industry – “second-in-commands, third-in-commands, and even fourth-in-commands.

Bruno Pavlovsky, Chanel’s president of fashion, explained that they swiftly identified three individuals they conversed with, but Mathieu instantly distinguished himself due to his impressive background, his vision for Chanel, and his captivating modernity. “We selected the candidate whose values, skills, and perspective on women, our customers, aligned most closely with ours,” Pavlovsky said. “A crucial factor for me was that I felt a deep-rooted admiration and respect for the legacy created by Mademoiselle Chanel, Karl, and Virginie in him.

On the fourth official release for Blazy, we find him marking the house, taking over from Virginie Viard who departed Chanel in June of last year. Meanwhile, Louise Trotter has stepped into the role of leadership at Bottega Veneta, replacing Blazy.
