Max’s Fate in Doctor Odyssey’s Season Finale: Heroic Death or Hopeful Rescue?

The Season 1 finale trailer for “Doctor Odyssey” might hint at a bleak future for one of its main characters. This series centers around the personal and work lives of the healthcare team aboard a high-end cruise ship, including nurses Avery (Phillipa Soo) and Tristan (Sean Teale), as well as new chief medical officer Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson).

In the second-to-last episode of “Doctor Odyssey,” titled “The Wave,” the crew encountered a catastrophic earthquake that triggered a deadly tsunami. Max, who had accompanied some passengers on a hiking trip, was stranded on land, while the rest of his team on The Odyssey had to manage the tsunami at sea.

Following the turmoil brought about by the tsunami, Season 1, Episode 17 concluded with Max trapped inside an abandoned church as a subsequent earthquake struck, causing his radio to malfunction. This development unfolded after Captain Massey (Don Johnson) made the daring choice to navigate back towards the port in search of Max and other survivors despite the inherent risks.

In simpler terms, the official team behind ABC’s series “Doctor Odyssey” unveiled a fresh trailer for Episode 18 (the season finale). This sneak peek offered further insights into the devastation caused by the tsunami, and hinted at what lies ahead for the character Max.

In the brief 30-second clip, Captain Massey’s choice to return to base proved costly when he was dismissed from service. Regardless, Avery chose to act independently and spearhead a rescue operation aimed at locating Max.

At 13 seconds into the trailer, there’s a quick peek at Max and his temporary coroner ally, Barry (played by guest star Jim O’Heir), both trying hard to stay upright during another earthquake tremor.

As a movie buff, I was thrilled to learn that the trailer hinted at Max’s survival after his radio fell silent. However, it appears that their journey is far from over, given how the preview concluded with Avery, filled with panic, rushing towards the church and frantically calling out for Max as if he were trapped beneath the ruins.

Since Doctor Odyssey hasn’t been renewed for a second season by ABC, mainly because of its high production costs, Max’s possible demise in the upcoming episode might create a significant impact on The Odyssey team if it turns out to be the final episode.

Despite the impending big farewell of Max in the final episode of “Doctor Odyssey”, his departure might pave the way for various plotlines as the show could now focus more on its main characters Avery and Tristan, who share the limelight with him.

Alongside the trailer, ABC also released an official synopsis for Doctor Odyssey Episode 18:

When Max’s communication stops, Max and Barry hide in a deserted church as Tristan assumes command over The Odyssey. Under pressure, Avery launches a risky rescue operation to locate Max before it’s too late.

Under the collective creativity of Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, the series titled Doctor Odyssey stands out, with its compelling performances led by Joshua Jackson, Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, and Don Johnson as the central figures.

In addition to being packed with regular characters, the show frequently features an impressive roster of guest stars each week, such as Shania Twain, Kathryn Newton, and even a crossover episode with Angela Bassett’s character Athena Grant from “9-1-1”, which appeared in Episode 11 of “Doctor Odyssey”.

Will Max Die in Doctor Odyssey’s Season 1 Finale?

Having Joshua Jackson’s character, Max Bankman, serve as the heart of “Doctor Odyssey,” it might prove detrimental to the series if he were written off early in Season 1, potentially causing issues should the show be picked up for another season.

According to Deadline’s report from March 2025, it was disclosed that the Season 1 finale of Doctor Odyssey was penned with the possibility of serving as the series finale. This implies that a crucial character’s demise might occur, as Max’s survival remains uncertain.

If “Doctor Odyssey” isn’t renewed, concluding the series with Max sacrificing his life to save someone he hardly knew feels like a fitting and heroic farewell for his character, but it would still be heart-wrenching in every aspect. It’s also appropriate that Avery is present during Max’s last moments (if indeed he will die), given their relationship, especially since Max admitted his love for her beforehand.

Max’s demise underscores the perilous nature of The Odyssey, implying that no character is invulnerable. If the series comes back for a second season, this could escalate the danger and tension in each upcoming episode.

Regardless of the outcome, it’s beneficial that the Season 1 finale was designed as a potential series finale because it ensures a fulfilling conclusion, regardless of whether Max lives or not.
