As a seasoned movie reviewer with a knack for sniffing out the authenticity behind the silver screen, I must say that the ongoing legal battle between James Hunter and Mia Goth leaves me scratching my head more than a mind-bending puzzle from the latest M. Night Shyamalan flick.
When a person files a lawsuit against a well-known figure or celebrity like Mia Goth, any controversial aspects from their previous life might surface as well. This is happening with James Hunter, a background actor involved in the movie MaXXXine, who has accused Goth of assault and is currently taking legal action. However, since the lawsuit is still being resolved, it’s worth noting that Hunter’s past criminal record has come to light, which could create an impression that he might be after a quick settlement.
As reported by Rolling Stone, prior to working on the A24 horror film, Hunter was embroiled in legal troubles, both criminal and civil. According to court records, this background actor is currently involved in two distinct ongoing civil lawsuits initiated by an ex-girlfriend and her stepfather. The lawsuit stems from a 2022 domestic violence incident, during which the woman obtained a restraining order, describing their relationship as “unhealthy.” She alleges that following their breakup, Hunter started stalking her and even made suicidal threats, as stated in the court documents. Matters escalated when, according to the woman, Hunter threatened to disseminate explicit images of her to her school’s dean and post sexually explicit photos and videos of her online. The court documents, which contain additional texts and threatening messages from Hunter, appear to corroborate her account.
James Hunter Has Had Other Legal Issues
In response to his ex-girlfriend’s allegations and after the court issued an order of protection, Hunter decided to challenge these claims by filing an appeal and a separate lawsuit against her. He asserted that she breached an informal agreement from 2019 concerning filming scenes for an unfinished movie he was producing, for which she had received $2,000 but failed to fulfill the terms of the contract. A year later, Hunter also sued her stepfather, accusing him of making threats when Hunter attempted to collect his payment, seeking a compensation of $2 million. However, the woman and her stepfather countered by requesting the judge to label Hunter as a “vexatious litigant,” which refers to individuals who file unnecessary lawsuits.
Beyond this incident, it’s worth noting that in 2015, Hunter spent ten days in Los Angeles County jail following an arrest on charges connected to a rental scam targeted at college students in the Los Angeles area. According to the UCLA Police Department’s statement, “Hunter often posted advertisements for rentals on Craigslist. He would allegedly defraud victims by taking their money while transferring the lease to another person.” Subsequently, Hunter was given a three-year probation sentence in this case, but it was expunged in 2018 when his probationary period ended. However, Hunter refutes these allegations and maintains he never defrauded anyone. His denials, though, are delivered in a manner that appears particularly defensive and confrontational. In a conversation with Rolling Stone, he cautioned the reporter to exercise caution when publishing their findings. Given his past actions, these instances raise questions about his lawsuit against Goth, director Ti West, and A24.
In my account as a background actor, I’ve filed a lawsuit against Goth and A24, claiming an unsettling event during filming. During a scene, I allege that the actress kicked me in the head. Afterward, she pursued me to a portable restroom, forcefully opened the door, and launched into a harsh verbal attack when I attempted to apologize for not locking the door. According to my lawsuit, Goth reportedly said, “Nobody will believe you because you’re nothing. Get the hell off my set, you big baby.” I also assert in the lawsuit that this kick resulted in a concussion for me. When I informed production about the incident, they allegedly told me I was no longer required and would not return for my final two days of work.
As a movie critic, I find myself questioning Hunter’s assertions, as Jeff Olan, the casting director responsible for hiring background actors, has stated that he was never informed about the incident when Hunter was instructed not to return to set. Perplexed by this, Olan shared, “I can’t wrap my head around it… It simply doesn’t add up at all… He never expressed any concerns about an incident on the set.” A24, the studio backing Goth, has stood firm in their support of Mia, with a spokesperson for the company commenting, “Given that this matter is currently under litigation, we are unable to provide further comments. However, we remain committed to vigorously defending Mia and the entire filmmaking team against these unfounded allegations.”
