Maya Rudolph Gets Real About Returning To SNL To Play Kamala Harris And 'The World' Deciding She'd Do It Before She Said Yes

As a seasoned gamer of life and pop culture, I eagerly await the return of Saturday Night Live (SNL) for its 50th season, especially with Maya Rudolph reprising her spot-on impersonation of Vice President Kamala Harris. The anticipation is palpable as we edge closer to the political spoofs that will grace our screens on Saturday nights.

The political landscape is heating up at the same time as “SNL” prepares for its return to TV screens in 2024, which can only mean one thing – political satire will fill Saturday nights! It was widely speculated online that Maya Rudolph would reprise her role as Vice President Kamala Harris after Harris was officially announced as the Democratic candidate for POTUS. Rumors have it that Rudolph agreed to return to “SNL” following discussions with others about her portraying Harris again.

News about Kamala Harris becoming the Democratic nominee for U.S. President instead of Joe Biden didn’t take long to spark speculation about Maya Rudolph playing a significant role in Saturday Night Live (SNL) during its 50th season. Given her Emmy win for portraying Harris in 2020 when she served as Vice President, such assumptions aren’t surprising. However, for the actress, this renewed interest was “intriguing.” In an interview with Variety, she expressed:

During this phase of my existence, I find myself in an intriguing situation, as it seems to be the unique instance where my actions precede global recognition. Indeed, it brought on quite a chuckle.

It’s a good thing that Maya Rudolph is up for returning to play Kamala Harris for SNL Season 50; fans wasted no time in starting to speculate over who would portray Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, on the sketch comedy show opposite her. For his part, Emhoff joked that Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, and Chris Hemsworth should be candidates to play him. Then came the requests for who would play Minnesota Governor Tim Walz after he was announced as Harris’ running mate. The talk of her return to SNL took off quickly. Also in a conversation with Variety, Rudolph said:

It’s a huge compliment. But it was also very bizarre, because I woke up to an article saying that I was confirmed to play her — and I hadn’t spoken to anyone! This is so much bigger than me, and this is about something very important. I’m thrilled to be associated with it, and I’m also glad that I’ve played her and everyone’s cool with it. She likes it.

It’s truly flattering when an influential figure appreciates a portrayal on Saturday Night Live (SNL), and back in 2020, Kamala Harris expressed her admiration for Maya Rudolph’s representation on Late Night with Seth Meyers during her Vice Presidential campaign. She even joked about wanting to ensure Rudolph would have an enjoyable eight-year stint on SNL. How things have evolved since Harris was the Vice Presidential candidate compared to her current position as President of the United States!

As I eagerly anticipate what Rudolph brings to the table as Harris on SNL’s Season 50, let’s not forget to check out her performance alongside Beck Bennett as Mike Pence. Here’s a sneak peek!

Saturday Night Live (SNL) is known for occasionally inviting actors to reappear as significant political figures, and these performances often receive praise. For instance, Alec Baldwin won an Emmy for his portrayal of Donald Trump in 2017 and was nominated twice more for the same SNL role. Similarly, Melissa McCarthy received an Emmy in 2017 for her depiction of then-Press Secretary Sean Spicer. It remains to be seen if Kate McKinnon will earn another Emmy for her portrayal of Kamala Harris.

It’s yet to be determined if Maya Rudolph will make her comeback as Kamala Harris on Saturday Night Live during the Season 50 premiere on September 28, but it seems unlikely that she won’t appear then. In the meantime, you can catch her earlier portrayals and her time as a cast member from 2000-2007 by subscribing to Peacock Premium and streaming the shows.
