As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more than a few election cycles come and go, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I hear about Maya Rudolph returning to SNL as Kamala Harris. I remember her first stint as Harris back in 2019, and it was a performance that left me in stitches. Her impression became an instant classic, and it’s not hard to see why she won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for it.
As a longtime fan of Saturday Night Live (SNL), I am beyond excited to learn that Maya Rudolph will be returning to the show for its historic 50th season! I remember watching her hilarious skits and impersonations during her tenure on SNL from 2000 to 2007, and she has continued to shine as a guest host in recent years.
As reported by Deadline, Maya Rudolph is set to return to Saturday Night Live (SNL) in the final stages of the Presidential Election campaign, portraying Kamala Harris once more. The shooting for Season 3 of her Apple TV+ comedy series Loot has been postponed to accommodate Rudolph’s SNL commitments. Since both Loot and SNL are produced by Universal Television, it was straightforward to adjust the schedule. However, it is anticipated that production on Loot will only begin after the election, as Rudolph may not continue playing Harris on SNL if she secures the Democratic nomination and wins the Presidency.
SNL Presidents
On December 21, 2019, Rudolph made her debut as Harris in an SNL cold open, quickly winning over audiences. Despite having a minor guest part, the impression swiftly gained popularity online and was transformed into a meme. In 2021, Rudolph was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Kamala Harris. Once Joe Biden chose not to run in the 2024 presidential election and instead endorsed Kamala Harris, fans started eagerly anticipating a repeat performance by Harris.
Previously, Rudolph played the role of Kamala Harris alongside Jim Carrey portraying Joe Biden in SNL skits leading up to the 2020 Presidential election. This type of casting often attracts large audiences but presents a challenge when the campaign concludes, as SNL requires a permanent actor for the President. After Carrey’s portrayal of Joe Biden on SNL, Alex Moffatt, James Austin Johnson, and Mikey Day each tried their hand at the role. However, Rudolph must soon go back to work on Loot, leaving SNL in need of a long-term Kamala Harris. Presidential parodies on SNL often have a lasting cultural influence, such as Dana Carvey’s portrayal of George H.W. Bush, Phil Hartman as Bill Clinton, and Will Ferrell as George W. Bush.
On September 28, 2024, Saturday Night Live will be back on air. Since the Presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024, this means SNL has six weeks prior to the election and potentially another seven weeks following it, allowing them to fully capitalize on Maya Rudolph’s Emmy-winning portrayal of Kamala Harris.
