It appears that enthusiasts of are now aware of the estimated return date for the Marvel animated series, but it won’t be as swift as initially anticipated. Contrary to what many fans thought, Season 2 of this show won’t premiere on Disney+ until 2026, according to Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum in an interview with Collider. He mentioned:
The second season of X-Men ’97 will air in 2026; we’re currently developing it, and I’m thrilled about it. Revisiting that ’90s universe feels surreal, almost unbelievable to me because I spent a significant part of my life at Marvel, and this project feels like cashing in on old memories. Watching X-Men after school was a huge part of my childhood, and now, getting the chance to work with these actors in this universe is exactly why I chose this line of work.
Launched in March 2024, “X-Men ‘97” revolves around a group of mutants who employ their extraordinary abilities to safeguard a world that loathes and dreads them. Throughout the series, they confront trials unlike any before, compelled to tackle an unforeseen, perilous future. The story continues from where “X-Men: The Animated Series” left off, with the X-Men fighting fresh threats as they grapple with the loss of their leader, Professor X.
The show welcomes back many familiar faces from the cherished 90s series, including Ray Chase portraying Scott Summers/Cyclops, Cal Dodd taking on James Howlett/Wolverine, Lenore Zann playing Anna-Marie Raven/Rogue, Alison Sealy-Smith as Ororo Munroe/Storm, George Buza embodying Dr. Henry “Hank” McCoy/Beast, A.J. LoCascio in the role of Remy LeBeau/Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilation Lee/Jubilee, Jennifer Hale assuming Jean Grey and Madelyne Pryor/Goblin Queen roles, J.P. Karliak portraying Kevin Sydney/Morph, and Matthew Waterson acting as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto.

They appreciate how the series respects the iconic Marvel characters and its predecessor, all while creating something innovative for the franchise. The first season was particularly praised for its bold risks, engaging action sequences, and mature themes.
MovieWeb’s own Richard Fink declared at the time that “The Mutants Are Back and Better Than Ever.”
1997’s X-Men revival is both nostalgic yet innovative, avoiding the pitfall of being a mere cash grab from the past. Instead, it leverages its ’90s setting to shed light on contemporary political matters, demonstrating what has persisted and what has evolved over time. The initial three episodes, which were screened for review, are not only a reminder of why the X-Men franchise has stood the test of time but also serve as a declaration: after years of marginalization, the X-Men are reemerging stronger than ever, underlining Marvel’s renewed commitment to these iconic characters.
