MCU Star AXED from Blockbuster, Now Starring in The Mummy Reboot – Here’s Why!

Following her unexpected exclusion from “Gladiator II”, Marvel Cinematic Universe actress May Calamawy now has an opportunity to shine in New Line Cinema’s upcoming reinvention of “The Mummy“. Known for directing “Evil Dead Rise”, Lee Cronin will be at the helm of this fresh take on the legendary movie monster, which bears no connection to past Universal Monster franchises. The film is being shot concurrently in Ireland and Spain, with a planned release date of April 17, 2026.

According to reports, May Calamawy has been added to the cast of “The Mummy”. Calamawy previously starred as Layla El-Faouly / Scarlet Scarab in “Moon Knight”. Furthermore, Veronica Falcón and May Elghety have also joined the cast of The Mummy. Falcón is most recognized for her roles on TV series such as “Why Women Kill” and “Perry Mason”, as well as movies like “Jungle Cruise” and “Imaginary”. May Elghety, an Egyptian actress, has acted in films like the 2016 Cannes Film Festival-selected movie, “Clash”.

In addition to Jack Reynor and Laia Costa, who were earlier announced for the cast, a three-person group will also be part of the upcoming movie “The Mummy.” Although specifics about the storyline are yet undisclosed, it remains unclear if any of these actors will portray the title character. Cronin is both the writer and director of “The Mummy,” marking one of the first significant films to emerge post the merger between Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions and James Wan’s Atomic Monster production company.

May Calamawy’s Cut Role in ‘Gladiator II’ and MCU Future

It’s great to see May Calamawy joining the cast of The Mummy, as although she made a big impact in Moon Knight, she hasn’t had much opportunity to shine so far. Unfortunately, it appears that Marvel Studios has no plans for Moon Knight Season 2 at the moment. Additionally, there’s been no word on whether Calamawy’s character or the Scarlet Scarab will feature in Avengers: Doomsday. Previously, she was cast in Gladiator II, but ultimately her role was significantly reduced and she was removed from the film. The only remaining evidence of her scenes are silent appearances, which is a big difference from what was initially promised as a substantial part.

There were rumors that Melissa Barrera-like circumstances might have led to Mohammed Calamawy being dropped from Gladiator II, as he openly supports Palestine and advocates for a truce, which has reportedly resulted in backlash in the industry. It’s regrettable that such vocal support for a crucial cause seems to have negative consequences, even though it enjoys widespread backing.

Although it’s unfortunate that Disney and Paramount appear not to support Calamawy, her inclusion in the cast of The Mummy promises a refreshing change and an opportunity for her to explore a new genre. With Veronica Falcón and May Elghety also joining her, Calamawy will undoubtedly contribute to The Mummy’s uniqueness and make it a highly anticipated horror movie for 2026. Cronin’s reimagining of The Mummy appears to be the modern take on the classic monster that Universal’s Dark Universe was unable to deliver.
