As a lifelong Marvel fan with over three decades of comics under my belt and countless hours spent watching superhero movies, I must say that the Golden Globe Awards have finally done something right by introducing the Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category. This new honor has opened up a whole new world for Marvel Studios’ blockbusters, with “Deadpool & Wolverine” being one of the lucky nominees.
The nominations for the Golden Globe Awards have sparked the usual mix of complaints about overlooked films and unexpected nods. However, a fresh category has been introduced this year to address longstanding criticisms that popular films are often neglected by traditional award committees. This change has paved the way for Marvel Studios’ blockbuster hit to secure a nomination, despite stiff competition from supernatural themes such as ghosts, witches, and extraterrestrials.
As a cinephile, I’m thrilled about the introduction of the “Top Cinematic and Box Office Recognition” category this year. This honor is for films that have not only raked in a massive box office success but also resonated deeply with audiences worldwide. To be eligible, a film must have earned at least $150 million globally, with a minimum of $100 million from the domestic market, or have garnered comparable digital streaming views. This category truly highlights the blockbuster hits that have left an indelible mark on our collective cinematic experience!
Clearly, Marvel Studios has paved the way for the release of Deadpool and Wolverine, a collaboration that grossed an impressive $1.6 billion globally at the box office. Yet, the path to victory in the Marvel Cinematic Universe won’t be easy for its champions. Although the team-up film featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, with its numerous cameos and multiverse antics, ignited the box office, it is not the only major contender vying for the top spot. To secure victory this time, a catchy soundtrack and sharp one-liners may not be enough.
Who is Up Against ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ at the Golden Globes?
Although a superhero movie like Deadpool and Wolverine is often expected to be a front-runner for popular awards, and undeniably will collect several accolades in the upcoming months, Marvel’s dynamic duo faces stiff competition from another extraordinary pair – Glinda and Elphaba, who hail from the world of .
Over the past few weeks, the musical film has been making waves at the box office, setting new records and ending a string of disappointments for Broadway adaptations. Additionally, it has garnered numerous nominations across several categories such as Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress – Musical or Comedy (Cynthia Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress – Musical or Comedy (Ariana Grande). Jon M. Chu’s directorial effort for the musical extravaganza has been a massive hit, although he himself wasn’t nominated. In many polls, it is seen as a tough contender to beat.
Joining the fray is the long-awaited sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” a continuation of Tim Burton’s 1988 cult hit that garnered significant affection from viewers in September. Contenders also include “Alien: Romulus,” “Gladiator II,” “Inside Out 2,” “Twisters,” and “The Wild Robot.” Each film has generated substantial box office revenues and critical acclaim from audiences. Predicting the victor is quite challenging, but it’s clear that this year is marked by a sequel craze, as six out of eight nominations are follow-ups.
