As a seasoned movie enthusiast who’s spent countless hours poring over reels and reels of celluloid, I can confidently say that Jason Statham is the modern-day action hero we never knew we needed. His movies may not always find favor with critics or the box office, but they have an undeniable knack for captivating audiences on free streaming platforms. It’s like these films were designed to be discovered years after their initial release, much like a fine wine maturing in a cellar.
2024’s box office duds are surely peering over their shoulders at him, puzzling over how they can mimic his magic touch. Even my oldie but goodie, “The Mechanic: Resurrection” (the 2016 action-thriller sequel to the 2011 hit, “The Mechanic”), which just won’t fade away on streaming platforms, is still making waves in their list of most-watched films.
In “Mechanic: Resurrection,” Statham re-embraces his character as Arthur Bishop, a retired master assassin forced back into action for performing more and more improbable assignments. The film offers a lesson straight from the Statham playbook, featuring high-octane, extravagant action scenes, a somewhat straightforward storyline, and an abundance of the captivating allure of the hard-headed action hero. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics and audiences alike, it seems this “flop” has found a unique appeal in the realm of free streaming services.
In recent times, I’ve noticed that films starring Jason Statham, such as “Mechanic: Resurrection,” have been thriving on free streaming platforms. Movies like “Parker,” “The One,” and “Wrath of Man” have appeared in the Top 10 lists, while films such as “The Meg,” “Hobbs & Shaw,” and yes, “The Beekeeper,” have graced similar lists on paid platforms. It seems that no matter what people might think about the movies themselves, Jason Statham consistently delivers a streaming hit.
Jason Statham’s Rise to Action Movie Royalty
Jason Statham’s career path deviated significantly from what one might expect for a successful Hollywood action star. Before he made his mark in movies, Statham was actually part of Britain’s National Diving Squad for more than a decade. He even participated in competitions like the 1990 Commonwealth Games. After a brief stint as a model, Statham received his big break in 1998 when he starred in Guy Ritchie’s hit gangster film, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. His subsequent roles in films such as Snatch, the Transporter series, and Crank helped establish him as an action star akin to Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jean-Claude Van Damme in the ’80s.
It appears that Statham shines brightest when portraying characters who tend to disregard established rules, instead following their personal moral compass rather than being confined by legal limitations. If a movie poster featuring Statham doesn’t show him with a gun, something might have gone amiss. Additionally, apart from his leading roles, Statham has also been part of several major franchises, notably The Expendables and the Fast & Furious series.
If you haven’t caught the film “Mechanic: Resurrection” yet, I find it hard to believe there are still people who haven’t! But don’t worry, if you haven’t seen it or even if you have, it’s now streaming on Tubi for your enjoyment. The movie, which didn’t do exceptionally well when initially released more than eight years ago, much like some of Jason Statham’s characters, just keeps coming back. So why not give it another watch?
