Instead of routinely expecting the unfortunate fate of shows ending after a single season (the dreaded ax falling), there’s some positive news this time around as the streamer has decided to renew one of its recent surprise hits – a crime thriller series – for another season. The Colombian crime series, Medusa, debuted on the streaming platform not too long ago, and it looks like it will be back for a second season, as the cast announced the good news via their social media accounts.
The unexpected announcement for another season follows closely after “Medusa” premiered on Netflix on March 5th this month. A recent Twitter post reads, “Oh dear, Barbara can hardly recall the buzz about ‘Medusa’ getting a second season. Only on Netflix.” Hailing from Barranquilla, Colombia, Medusa promises an original tale filled with excitement, drama, deceit, and suspense that viewers crave for. Given that Season 1 concludes with a nail-biting cliffhanger, enthusiasts of the show will undoubtedly rejoice to learn that Medusa Season 2 has been confirmed.
Created jointly by Said Chamie and Claudia Sánchez, who is also known as “The Queen of Flow”, the show “Medusa” features Juana Acosta (known from “The Innocent”), Manolo Cardona (“Who Killed Sara?”), Sebastián Martínez (“The Accident”), Adriana Arango (“The Queen of Flow”), Luis Fernando Hoyos (“Always a Witch”), Juanita Molina (“Miss Adrenaline: A Tale of Twins”) and Mabel Moreno (“The Queen of Flow”). If you’re considering diving into this series, here is the official summary for “Medusa” that you might find helpful.
There’s a plot afoot to harm CEO Barbara Hidalgo. Could she uncover the perpetrator since her family appears to be maneuvering relentlessly to seize control of their Colombian business empire?
‘Medusa’ Season 1 Has Been a Huge Hit for Netflix
The series “Medusa” has taken Netflix by storm, currently ranking second worldwide on their charts, trailing only the widely praised crime drama, “Adolescence.” Although we don’t have extensive viewership data yet as the show has been out for approximately two weeks, it’s worth noting that “Medusa” Season 1 was viewed for a total of 96.80 million hours in its two qualifying weeks, with a 10% decrease from week 1 to week 2. This translates to around 12.90 million views, a fact that explains the swift renewal decision.
Despite receiving harsh criticism from critics, the series Medusa has managed to garner viewers. Ty’Kira Smalls of Common Sense Media described it as a “melodramatic, mundane mystery” that struggles with pacing and is convoluted, while Joel Keller of Decider found it utterly ridiculous. However, some may find enjoyment in this series if they appreciate a mystery thriller with an absurd plot and campy acting. It raises questions about why Netflix allows acclaimed shows with devoted fanbases to falter while giving another chance to heavily criticized shows like Medusa, which is a peculiarity (and challenge) of the streaming age.
