As an ardent admirer of Hindi cinema, I find myself captivated by the life and career of the enchanting Zeenat Aman. Her journey from being a Miss India runner-up to becoming one of the highest-paid actresses of her time is nothing short of inspiring.
Movies in Hindi have produced numerous entertainers throughout the decades, with stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Rekha, Hema Malini, Parveen Babi, and Neetu Singh (later Kapoor) being some of the leading actors from the 70s. During this time, an actress named Zeenat Aman made history with her bold on-screen performances. Known for causing a stir on film sets, capturing the heart of a superstar, and learning a lesson about tardiness from her director due to delays caused by Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman left an indelible mark in Hindi cinema.
As a lifestyle connoisseur reflecting on my own journey, I find myself reminiscing about the time when I, Zeenat Aman, graced the silver screen as one of the most sought-after actresses during my era. My breakthrough role came under the guidance of the legendary Dev Anand in the film “Hare Rama Hare Krishna.
On September 23rd, Zeenat Aman posted on Instagram about her experience shooting for Hare Rama Hare Krishna. She recounted a story where she used a chillum (a traditional Indian smoking pipe) and got quite intoxicated. In her words, she was “really, really high”.
Later on, I discovered that my mother was extremely upset when she found out about what transpired, and she scolded the senior team members severely for letting me engage in drug use. Fortunately, I managed to avoid her anger.
In his memoir “Romancing With Life,” the esteemed actor Dev Anand confessed his affection for his co-star Zeenat Aman. He admitted that he was deeply in love with her. Moreover, he stated that Zeenat had a relationship beyond just director-actor dynamics with Raj Kapoor, the renowned figure of Indian Cinema, known as The Greatest Showman, which caused him considerable distress.
In response to his confession on Instagram in April 2023, Zeenat Aman conveyed feelings of embarrassment and pain. The 72-year-old actress described Dev Anand as a “veteran mentor” whom she held in high regard and affection, but her admiration for him was platonic.
Once upon a time, Zeenat Aman shared an incident where she considered leaving a movie set due to her co-star, Amitabh Bachchan, arriving late. More recently, in October of last year, Aman recounted that the director scolded her for slowing down production, and she instructed her team to gather their belongings. Eventually, Big B apologized to her directly on set.
In 1970, Zeenat took part in the Miss India pageant and placed as the second runner-up. Later that year, she also competed in the Miss Asia Pacific International contest and won the title.
