Meet actor who once survived on biscuits and frooti; worked as dance teacher to make ends meet; now he is one of most bankable stars

As a lifestyle expert, I find the story of Rajkummar Rao to be nothing short of inspiring. His journey from struggling financially to becoming one of India’s most sought-after actors is a testament to his resilience and determination. It’s heartwarming to see how he overcame adversity with grace, and it’s evident that he hasn’t forgotten his humble beginnings.

This performer, starting out in 2010, has since become a recognized name within the entertainment world. He’s faced periods of financial hardship too, at times finding it tough to meet his obligations. Over the past 14 years, he’s graced many film sets, with some productions proving successful while others failed to impress audiences. Initially, he accepted various supporting roles before eventually earning a spot as a main lead actor.

Discussing none other than Rajkummar Rao himself, who’s been basking in the limelight of success this year. Movies such as Stree 2, Srikanth, and Mr. & Mrs. Mahi have garnered favorable responses from critics and viewers alike.

During an interview with Raj Shamani on his podcast, Rajkummar opened up about some very personal hardships from his past. He disclosed that for a span of three years, his school teachers generously covered the tuition costs for him and his siblings because of financial strife at their home.

At times, he shared that his family received help from relatives for school materials and tuition costs. In simpler terms, during certain periods, the teachers themselves pitched in to cover our school fees. They did this because they didn’t want any of us to drop out of school, so they generously lent their support instead.

In the future, Srikanth, the actor, reminisced about his journey towards becoming an actor. After completing school, he was 18 when he enrolled in Sri Ram Centre, a drama school in Delhi. He mentioned that a friend suggested he attend college to save money on commuting expenses, but little did he know, before that advice, he would bike 70 kilometers to reach his acting school daily.

Speaking candidly about his humble beginnings in Mumbai, the star of “The Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video” revealed that at one point, there was just 18 rupees left in his bank account. In those challenging circumstances, he managed to get by on Parle G biscuits and Frooti.

He recounted a time when he had just Rs 18 left in his bank account while residing in Mumbai. To make ends meet, he lived very economically. The three of them shared a single flat, and to save even more, he often skipped lunch, settling for a Parle G biscuit and Frooti that cost Rs 4 instead.

In the podcast, Shahid himself disclosed that his initial professional role involved instructing dance to a child of seven years old, and in return, he received INR 300 as payment.

He explained that he was in high school when he started teaching and expressed how happy he was to receive that amount, considering the difficult financial situation at home.

Rajkummar happily shared a heartfelt story about spending his initial paycheck on groceries for his family. After meeting all of their necessities, he still had some extra cash which he splurged on traditional ghee. He pointed out that it was an exceptional luxury for them to enjoy ghee with their flatbreads at the time.

In terms of his professional life, you’ll soon see Rao featured in the movie titled “Maalik,” directed by Pulkit. This action-packed thriller has Rao playing a gangster character.
