In recent years, the Indian film industry has been home to numerous gifted actors who have been active in multiple languages for several decades. However, it was not until he began appearing in Hindi films that the admirers of Bollywood cinema truly appreciated his acting skills. A notable example is Tota Roy Choudhury, whose performances alongside stars like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Kajol, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, and others, caught the attention of many viewers.
Prior to making a significant impact in Bengali films, Tota Roy Choudhury had different plans; he was actually preparing for the Indian Army and studying hard to pass his entrance exams. However, fate had other ideas as he received an offer for a minor role in director Prabhat Roy’s movie instead.
Following that, his fascination for the movie world grew strong, leading him to commit to a career as an actor. His breakthrough role in Chokher Bali brought him into the limelight and earned him numerous honors. Recognized for his physical fitness, martial arts prowess, and dance abilities, Tota Roy Choudhury landed the part of Arun in Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh, alongside Vidya Balan. This film expanded his popularity within the Hindi film industry and among its viewers.
After that, he appeared in the 2017 political thriller film “Indu Sarkar,” directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. This was followed by “Helicopter Eela” where he acted alongside Kajol and portrayed the character of Arun. Additionally, he featured in streaming films such as “The Girl on the Train” and “Ajeeb Daastaans.
2023 saw Choudhury captivate audiences with his stunning Kathak dance performance alongside Ranveer Singh in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. In Karan Johar’s film, he portrayed Alia Bhatt’s father character and challenged traditional gender roles with confidence. Not only was his dancing skillful, but his portrayal of Chandon Chatterjee garnered widespread acclaim, becoming a hot topic among townsfolk.
Besides starring in Bengali and Hindi productions, he has also appeared in several films produced in Tamil and Kannada languages. Lately, you may have noticed him in the popular Netflix series “Black Warrant,” portraying the character SP Mukhopadhyay.
