Meet actor who was labeled ‘village girl, matka’ once, started career with TV but later shared screen space with Hrithik Roshan and is now…

Today’s spotlight is on a remarkable actress who faced harsh body shaming at the start of her professional life. Initially making her mark in television, she eventually graced the silver screen alongside some of the biggest stars in Bollywood.

Are you still unsure about the person we’re discussing? Let me clarify: The individual is none other than Ms. Mrunal Thakur, an actress with roots in a Marathi-speaking household, originally from the state of Maharashtra.

During her college years, she secured a role in the TV series Mujhse Kuchh Kehti…Yeh Khamoshiyaan (2012). Subsequently, she featured in various shows such as Har Yug Mein Aayega Ek – Arjun, Kumkum Bhagya, and others. After some time, she made her Hindi film debut with Love Sonia, which hit theaters in 2018.

After gracing the screen in the critically acclaimed biographical drama Super 30 alongside Hrithik Roshan, I found myself thrust into the limelight. Following that, I was fortunate enough to be part of Batla House, Toofaan, and Jersey, among other notable films. My performances in web series such as Ghost Stories and Dhamaka have also earned me significant praise from critics.

Even though Ms. Mrunal has become well-known in the world of Bollywood, her path to success was far from easy. In various interviews, she has shared that she faced criticism for her body shape and appearance.

Previously, during an interview with Times Now, the actress from Jersey candidly discussed instances where online trolls criticized her fuller figure. She acknowledged that weight loss might first affect her face, then move to her upper body, and eventually her lower body, but she would still retain her shape. Instead of feeling hurt by people labeling her as “Matka,” she expressed a sense of pride about it.

Last year, during an interview with Indian Express, actress Mrunal recalled a time when someone told her that she wasn’t attractive at all. When she inquired if he was referring to her character or herself personally, his response was that the character was attractive but he didn’t see her as such in real life.

She recounted, “In that situation, I suggested a ‘visual recognition test’ to him, which we carried out. When the photographer arrived, he didn’t recognize me in my character and exclaimed, ‘Who is this village girl?’ in Marathi. Later, he apologized for his mistake.

Mrunal’s next with Ajay Devgn is Son of Sardaar 2 which will be released on July 25, 2025.
