Meet the 10 Global Artists Featuring in Jameson’s Debut Sound Distillery

As a gamer who’s always on the hunt for unique sounds and experiences, I can’t help but be intrigued by Jameson’s Distilled Sounds program. Having dabbled in music production myself (albeit with a rather questionable understanding of what constitutes good rhythm), I appreciate the concept of close-knit collaboration and musical exploration.

Last month, Irish whiskey brand Jameson announced the launch of its Distilled Sounds program – a new multi-year initiative rooted in close-knit collaboration and music discovery. Having hosted the first Sound Distillery experience last week, it spotlights the ten artists selected to take part in the journey for its inaugural year.

Together with the renowned “Music Distiller” Anderson .Paak, a diverse group of musicians, vocalists, composers, and producers hailing from different parts of the world make up the first collaborative team. Each member contributes their local flavors and distinctive styles to the project, working in pairs to share ideas and broaden their musical horizons.

For a week, various workshops, performance opportunities, and social events were arranged to stimulate interaction among the artists. This environment encouraged them to share thoughts and incorporate fresh musical influences – like combining ballads with hip-hop rhythms or merging folk music with indie tones. Since this event occurred in Ireland, not only did the artists tap into their local sound environments, but they also explored traditional Celtic music genres deeply rooted within the country.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with these brilliant artists whom I admire, and we delved into the unique blend of sounds they create together. I was eager to understand their creative processes and aspirations behind each collaboration.

KAIIT & Claudia

At opposite ends of musical genres, KAIIT, an Australia-based, Papua New Guinea-born neo-soul singer, offers a nostalgic, warm vocal style, while Claudia, the certified pop-princess from Malaysia, delivers an upbeat harmony with a lively vibe. They are set to combine their tunes at the Sound Distillery by means of “open communication and free expression.” KAIIT expressed her anticipation for this event, stating, “This opportunity goes beyond simple performances; it’s about maintaining connections through sound collaboration – that’s what makes it truly exhilarating.”

Ian Hooper & Branko

Musician and record producer Branko, known for his collaborative work in the Portuguese music industry, often blends global sounds with the creative visions of renowned artists. At the Jameson Sound Distillery, he teams up with Ian Hooper, lead singer of indie folk band Mighty Oaks and a solo artist in his own right. Hooper expresses eagerness about this partnership, stating, “This collaboration will give me an opportunity to explore genres I wouldn’t have ventured into otherwise.” As he aims to refine his sound with a more pop-influenced style, Hooper adds, “My unique vocal signature makes merging our sounds an exciting and fruitful endeavor.”

Seedhe Maut & Shekhinah

According to rapper Siddhant Sharma, one half of Seedhe Maut, their music is a genuine reflection of their lived experiences. Emerging from India’s underground hip-hop scene, Seedhe Maut gained recognition with their dynamic flow that draws inspiration from the innovative creative spirit of modern Indian artists. By teaming up with South African artist Shekhinah – another pioneer in music who embodies her local subcultures – they aim to produce music that focuses on shared experiences within diverse communities.

Lady Donli & L’Rain

In the heart of their creative journeys, both Lady Donli and L’Rain embrace experimentalism. Over the course of her career, Nigerian vocalist Lady Donli has soaked up an array of genres unique to different African regions, such as afrobeat, jazz, amapiano, and funk. Similarly, multi-instrumentalist L’Rain blends diverse musical influences into her compositions. Their artistic homes in New York and Abuja brought them together, with Lady Donli emphasizing that exploring new frontiers, testing their creativity, and learning from each other within this shared musical community are key aspects of their creative process.
