Meet The Engineer: The Game-Changing Hero Before Superman’s Epic Return!

With James Gunn’s upcoming movie slated for summer release, fans are anxiously awaiting any tidbits of information before it hits theaters. Apart from a cast brimming with some of DC’s most renowned characters, the film is also anticipated to present lesser-known figures, even for comic enthusiasts. One of the most intriguing among these newcomers is Angela Spica, alias the Engineer, whose backstory doesn’t stem from the main DC Universe. A brilliant young woman, Angela is one of the original members of The Authority, a more aggressive superhero team that takes extreme measures to improve the world.

In the film, Angela’s character offers an intriguing contrast to Superman. While Superman embodies “Truth, Justice, and the American Way,” a concept that has grown increasingly challenging as the world becomes more complex, she presents a more cynical yet pragmatic perspective on life. Although her role in the movie may not be substantial, given its purpose as a prelude to Gunn’s long-term project, The Authority, it will serve to introduce viewers and Superman to the existence of heroes who are unapologetically bold in their actions for the sake of justice, even if it means bending moral rules.

The Engineer Got Her Powers as an Inheritance

The original identity of the Engineer wasn’t Angela Spica; instead, it’s an as-yet-unnamed individual with comparable intellectual prowess who deserves the credit. However, for two distinct reasons, the Engineer took notice of Angela. Firstly, her lifelong ambition to become a superhero caught his attention. Secondly, Angela’s exceptional abilities, which made her suitable for good deeds, were what initially attracted him. The original Engineer recognized that Angela was not only capable of equaling him but also worthy of such a role due to her genius-level intellect.

This situation resulted in a backup plan being established: if the original Engineer were to pass away, all of his belongings and research would go to Angela. Upon unexpectedly inheriting these resources, Angela was able to fulfill her long-held dream. Using what the first Engineer had passed down to her, Angela eventually became the successor he had envisioned.

She is a Nanite War Machine

Previously stated, Angela, the Engineer, gained her abilities by leveraging the research of the original Engineer in the field of nanite technology. Rather than merely wearing these tiny robots as protective gear, Angela aspired to go beyond. In an audacious action, Angela gradually removed her blood from her system while simultaneously infusing it with approximately 9 pints of a liquid metal laced with nanites.

In addition to preserving Angela’s life, the nanites within her body offer extraordinary capabilities that surpass normal human limits. These nanites serve as versatile tools for Angela to adapt to any given situation. She has demonstrated shape-shifting abilities and the ability to create an armor plating that molds perfectly to her body. Furthermore, these nanites enable her to interact seamlessly with technology, transforming her into a formidable force in both physical combat and cyber warfare.

This Exposed The Engineer’s Less Than Noble Qualities

In her role within the Authority, Angela Spica is not an impeccable figure. This became particularly evident when she met Captain Atom. Originating from separate universes, Captain Atom eventually crossed into the Wildstorm Universe and came face-to-face with Engineer. Initially tasked to monitor him for potential threats to the planet, Angela was soon drawn to him, leading to a blossoming relationship. In time, Engineer even attempted to persuade Captain Atom to adopt her methods.

Trouble ensued for the Engineer when she suspected Captain Atom of deceit, as it turned out he had compromised a trust linked to a perilous power. Though this revelation served as her motive, the Engineer’s emotions ran deep; jealousy and rage boiled over due to the loss of her recent companion. This episode underscores that she can be formidable when it comes to managing her emotional relationships.

She Has Been Known to Seek Petty Vengeance

While Angela is exceptionally intelligent, it’s important to note that she isn’t immune to having personal shortcomings. One of her less commendable traits is her tendency towards vengeance, which has been evident in certain aspects of her life. For instance, there have been occasions where Angela sought revenge against someone, and on some of these instances, her motivations were not completely justifiable. This is particularly true in her past relationship with Captain Atom. Despite his affection for her, Angela believed he had deceived her when she saw him with another woman. This allegation was enough for her to retaliate against him.

From my perspective as a fervent admirer, allow me to rephrase the scenario in a way that feels more personal: In a twisted form of retribution, I found myself temporarily ousted from the team, only to be replaced by a woman named Machine. Machine manipulated my mind, planting false memories that left me trapped in a dismal job and a family life that was nothing but a carefully crafted act by paid actors, all designed to keep me wretched.

When I finally managed to recall the truth, my thirst for vengeance against Machine became insatiable. The depths of my desire for retribution can hardly be fathomed, had not someone else taken her life before I could exact my own justice.

This Is Probably Before Becoming a Hero

As a gamer, I was taken aback when I saw the latest trailers hinting at the Engineer being at odds with Superman. Given her comic book persona as an agent of change, working for a questionable billionaire seems like a stark departure from her typical modus operandi. But then again, it’s still early days in her career, and I suspect this is merely setting up the Authority film that James Gunn has been eager to create.

Angela appears to be influenced by Luthor, potentially manipulated towards his goal of eliminating Superman. Alternatively, she might truly be loyal to him and possibly gained her powers due to his financial support. If this is true, using the opportunity to fulfill her aspirations could be a powerful incentive for serving him. She could be seen as a foreshadowing of Mercy Graves if she eventually betrays Luthor by the end of the movie, which seems likely. For now, she’s operating as someone who could turn out to be either an ally or adversary.

The Movie Might Examine Her Family Life

Hailing from a bustling household in Queens, New York, filled with six siblings like me, I, Angela Spica, often found myself in the shadow of my older siblings. But unlike many heroes who are molded by adversity, my upbringing was nothing short of loving. Although we weren’t financially affluent, my family’s unwavering support allowed my innate intelligence to flourish, propelling me through college at an impressively young age.

The unique aspect about Angela lies in her unconventional desire to become a superhero, fueled merely by her profound admiration for them. It’s possible that she felt her skills could be used to make a significant impact on the world, yet there’s no rational explanation as to why she chose this path other than her innate compassion. This portrays a person who is sincerely driven to do good, not because of the excitement or due to some personal tragedy, but simply because she genuinely cares.

She Even Held Off Apollo for a Time

The Engineer’s nanotechnology surpasses that of her predecessors in terms of power. Notably, she can adapt to various scenarios and exhibits extraordinary abilities such as reaching speeds fast enough to breach the atmosphere and travel through space, producing exact metallic replicas of herself, and synthesizing any element she recognizes.

Demonstrating her immense strength, the Engineer’s armor can withstand a nuclear explosion without any long-term damage. Remarkably, it can also endure a few attacks from Apollo, who serves as an embodiment of Superman-like powers. This feat underscores her impressive abilities, for such resistance is no small feat. Her most remarkable asset, however, lies not in brute force but in her intellect – her greatest superpower.

The Engineer Was Selected to Be the Brains of the Operation

In no time at all, the Engineer found herself in a position to make a lasting impact on her world, reshaping its destiny forever. Prior to her arrival, the universe known as Wildstorm was already home to an elite superhero squad: Stormwatch. However, circumstances led to the disintegration of this team, paving the way for a new group that would be free from political entanglements and manipulations. This fresh collective was being assembled by a woman named Jenny Sparks, who sought out individuals she felt could contribute significantly. With her exceptional intellect and lineage as a legacy hero, Angela not only brought valuable intelligence to the table but also lent credibility to this new team. Consequently, the Engineer became one of the original members of The Authority.

In simpler terms, the character known as ‘The Authority’ or ‘The Engineer’ accumulated many adversaries. She’s faced numerous challenges, including being temporarily replaced on the team by someone called “Machine.” Machine imprisoned the Engineer in a typical lifestyle filled with an abusive spouse and multiple children, who were all part of the deceit. Despite managing to escape, this incident showed that despite her intelligence, the Engineer is not indestructible and holds strong vengeful sentiments, eager to take revenge on Machine herself. This background gives fans a clear idea of what they might encounter when she appears in live-action for the first time.

She Got Them Back by Communicating With Another Universe

In the course of their lives, many heroes encounter a phase where they momentarily lose their abilities, and Angela was no different. Following an Electromagnetic Pulse attack, it appeared that her command over her nanites ceased to function entirely. Remarkably, having metallic elements in her bloodstream instead of regular blood didn’t prove fatal to her, despite the lack of control. Angela faced this novel situation with determination, resorting to her inherent skills and transitioning into a true engineer to aid others. At her most physically vulnerable state, she continued to put others before herself.

After experiencing a loss and regaining of her abilities in an extraordinary fashion, she found herself captive by her adversaries, working within a confined cosmic realm they called the Universe in a Cage. During this time, she managed to communicate with the universe itself and struck a deal to assist it. In return, the universe restored her powers and even bestowed some enhancements upon her. Unlike many heroes who recover their abilities through hardship, training, or scientific manipulation, Angela’s powers were granted by an actual, literal, other-worldly universe.

The Engineer Will Set Up the Authority’s First Appearance

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel the excitement brewing about the mystery woman in our upcoming movie. Although her specific role is still under wraps, it’s clear that her arrival will serve as a tantalizing hint of The Authority, who are set to make their long-awaited entrance. This suggests that The Authority has already been established, and her character, known as The Engineer, might be on a mission to assess Superman as a potential member. With powers that could possibly match his own, Superman would make an excellent addition, but only if he aligns with their values.

The Engineer could also be a standalone figure, navigating through life on her own. Her character serves to contrast Superman’s optimistic view of heroism with someone who possesses a more realistic, albeit blunt, perception of the world. Superman aspires for a world filled with better people, trusting they can reach that ideal independently. The Engineer believes in humanity’s potential for improvement, but she feels it’s necessary to first eliminate those with power who exploit others before they pose a threat to the world. The presence of the Engineer in the film encourages a discussion on whether one should inspire others to strive for self-improvement or be ready to take decisive action to prevent those misusing their authority from endangering the world.
