Since the television show Gilmore Girls first aired on The WB in October 2000, it has consistently attracted a dedicated fanbase. Spanning seven seasons until its end in May 2007, the series later returned with a four-part Netflix revival that premiered in November 2016. This show revolves around Lorelai Gilmore, a single mother, and her daughter Rory, who is academically talented and aspires to attend Harvard. Meanwhile, Lorelai dreams of owning an inn in their small town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut.
As a film aficionado, I can’t help but praise the quick-witted charm of this beloved series. Despite being set in a small town, it never fails to brim with an endless stream of events and community gatherings that make Stars Hollow truly unique. Here’s a rundown of the show’s main cast and cherished characters that have won our hearts.
Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham)
Always self-reliant, Lorelai is a quick-witted, passionate mother known for her coffee addiction and extensive pop culture trivia. She starts the story managing a local inn before eventually purchasing the Dragonfly Inn with her closest friend, Sookie. Lorelai became a mother at a young age to Rory and later chose to break free from her parents’ affluence in Stars Hollow to pave her own way. The character of Lorelai is portrayed by Lauren Graham, who followed up her role on “Gilmore Girls” with a stint on the NBC family drama “Parenthood” and now stars in Tubi’s new original series, “The Z-Suite.
Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel)
From an early age, Rory, an enthusiastic reader with a heart for books, attends Stars Hollow’s high school. Despite this, she harbors ambitions of studying at Harvard and makes the move to the esteemed Chilton Academy. Ultimately, she opts for Yale University and pursues her dream of emulating her role model, Christiane Amanpour, as a journalist. Like her mother, Rory’s affection for coffee is profound, and she possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of pop culture. Portrayed by Alexis Bledel, who gained recognition following her performance in the Gilmore Girls series, Rory later starred in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale as Emily Malek, a role that garnered her numerous award nominations.
Luke Danes (Scott Patterson)
Luke, the proprietor of Luke’s Diner, is often grumpy yet compassionate and consistently provides Lorelai with her coffee needs. He’s the uncle of Jess Mariano, who moves in with him during the second season of the show. As Lorelai’s future romantic interest and ultimate partner, it’s clear he harbors a tender affection for her and Rory, treating them more like kin. Luke is portrayed by Scott Patterson, who starred as Agent Peter Strahm in Saw IV and Saw V, and played the lead role, Sully Sullivan, on the Canadian series Sullivan’s Crossing.
Emily (Kelly Bishop) and Richard Gilmore (Edward Herrmann)
Lorelai’s parents are Emily and Richard. Emily leads a high-class lifestyle as a housewife, while Richard works in insurance. Despite their strained relationship, Lorelai sought her parents’ help when she needed money for Rory’s private school tuition at Chilton. This led to a weekly Friday dinner arrangement, which became a significant setting in the show.
Emily is acted by Kelly Bishop, who famously played Marjorie Houseman in the 1987 film “Dirty Dancing” and has a long history in theater. Richard is portrayed by Edward Herrmann, who kickstarted his career on stage. He’s also appeared in movies like “Overboard”, “The Lost Boys”, and “The Purple Rose of Cairo”. Sadly, Herrmann passed away at 71 in December 2014, so his character did not reappear for the Netflix miniseries, “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life”.
Sookie St. James (Melissa McCarthy) and Jackson Belleville (Jackson Douglas)
Sookie, a lively and vivacious companion of Lorelai, shares the inn’s management with her. In the series’ second season, she ties the knot with Jackson, a local farmer who supplies the inn with produce. Together they have two children. The character of Sookie is portrayed by Melissa McCarthy, whose acting career has skyrocketed since her time on “Gilmore Girls.” She has starred in numerous films such as “Bridesmaids,” “The Heat,” “Spy,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Genie.
Lane Kim (Keiko Agena) and Mrs. Kim (Emily Kuroda)
Lane, who has been Rory’s friend since they were children, secretly appreciates music and plays the drums, despite her conservative Seventh-day Adventist mother, Mrs. Kim, disapproving. Although not as close as Lorelai and Rory, Lane and her mother eventually manage to reconcile after a period of estrangement. Actress Keiko Agena portrays Lane, who is best recognized for her roles in both Gilmore Girls and 13 Reasons Why, where she played Pam Bradley.
Paris Geller (Liza Weil)
As a passionate movie critic, I found myself drawn into the captivating world of Gilmore Girls. In this enchanting series, I encountered the intriguing character of Paris, who initially crosses paths with Rory at Chilton. Their relationship, to put it mildly, wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. Paris, a touch neurotic and remarkably academically driven, had few genuine friends. Yet, as high school turned into college, Paris and Rory forged an unbreakable bond, even sharing a roof as roommates.
Bringing this complex character to life is none other than the incredibly talented Liza Weil. After her memorable portrayal of Paris, she went on to shine in How to Get Away With Murder and now graces our screens with her recurring role as Katherine Russo in The Cleaning Lady, showcasing her versatility and undeniable talent.
Dean Forester (Jared Padalecki)
In the television show “Gilmore Girls,” Dean is initially introduced as Rory’s first boyfriend. He holds a job at Doose’s Market as a bag boy. When the series begins, he relocates from Chicago to Stars Hollow. Rapidly forming a connection with Rory, they become a couple, but their relationship ultimately ends due to Rory’s growing feelings for Luke’s nephew, Jess. Later on, Dean marries a woman named Lindsay, only for the marriage to dissolve following his infidelity with Rory. Jared Padalecki, who portrays Dean, gained significant recognition for his role in the 15-season series “Supernatural” on The WB/CW network, which has since become his most prominent acting credit to date.
Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia)
In the show’s second season, Jess, portrayed by Milo Ventimiglia, arrives in Stars Hollow as a bit of a troublemaker and moves in with his uncle Luke. Similar to Rory, he has a passion for books, and they quickly form a bond based on their shared interests. After Rory’s boyfriend Dean breaks up with her due to her feelings for Jess, the two begin dating. However, their relationship is short-lived as Jess decides to leave town to live with his father. Later, Ventimiglia became known for his role as Jack Pearson in the NBC series This Is Us, and he has also appeared in the Netflix film Land of Bad.
Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry)
Logan, a wealthy socialite with roots in a newspaper empire similar to the New York Times, encounters Rory at Yale while both worked for the Yale Daily News. In the fifth season of the series, he becomes Rory’s third romantic interest. He started calling her “Ace” due to her journalistic aspirations, and over time, this nickname transformed into a term of affection. The character of Logan is portrayed by Matt Czuchry, who later starred as Conrad Hawkins in the Fox series ‘The Resident’ and more recently as Dexter Harding in the FX series ‘American Horror Story: Delicate’.
Eccentric Residents of Stars Hollow
Kirk Gleason (Sean Gunn)
In a more casual and accessible manner, we could say: Kirk, portrayed by Sean Gunn, is the most eccentric character living in Stars Hollow. Throughout the entire series, he takes on different jobs around town. You might recognize him as the man who brought Rocket, one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s characters, to life through motion-capture performances.
Michel Gerard (Yanic Truesdale)
Michel, the longtime French concierge at Lorelai’s inn, has been a familiar face for years. He is portrayed by actor Yanic Truesdale, who recently appeared in the movie “My Salinger Year” and the Netflix series “God’s Favorite Idiot”.
Taylor Doose (Michael Winters)
Taylor, a rigid town official, frequently annoys Luke with his numerous demands and regulations. Interestingly, he also runs Doose’s Market, the place where Dean spends his time. On screen, Taylor is portrayed by Michael Winters, a stage actor who has garnered more recognition for his theater work than his on-screen roles.
At the moment, you can find all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls, along with its revival titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, on Netflix.
