As a huge fan of Mel Brooks, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming HBO documentary about his extraordinary career. Mel’s impact on comedy and entertainment as a whole is immeasurable, and it’s fascinating to think about how he went from being a teenage comedian in the Catskills to becoming a legendary actor, writer, producer, and director.
HBO is set to air a two-part docu-series on the comedy legend Mel Brooks, produced by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio.
An upcoming collaboration between HBO Documentary Films and Apatow Productions is currently in production, following the story of Brooks as he travels from Brooklyn to Hollywood and Broadway. Previously, Joe Beshenkovsky worked with Apatow and Bonfiglio on HBO’s four-hour documentary “George Carlin’s American Dream.” In this new project, Beshenkovsky will be responsible for editing the documentary.
Apatow plans to create a film that spans Mel Brooks’ entire career, showcasing the comedy genius behind beloved farces and parodies. According to a statement released by the prolific Hollywood writer, director, and producer, “My passion for comedy was ignited by Mel Brooks. This project represents the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for me.”
Brooks’ career began with Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows where he worked alongside the late Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, and Larry Gelbart. That’s after the teenage comedian in the Catskills conquered the entertainment world with his satirical comedy.
Brooks garnered an Oscar win for penning the script of the zany comedy “The Producers.” He was additionally nominated for an Oscar in the song category from “Blazing Saddles,” and for writing and directing the film “Young Frankenstein” where he also acted. Noteworthy works outside of these include “Silent Movie,” “High Anxiety,” “History of the World — Part I,” and “Spaceballs.”
Brooks, who is a co-creator, along with Buck Henry, of the beloved TV comedy “Get Smart,” continues to be active at the age of 98. He’s currently working on a sequel to the 1987 “Star Wars” parody film “Spaceballs.” Josh Gad has been cast to star in this project, while Josh Greenbaum will direct.
Throughout a remarkable 70-year span, Brooks has achieved an exceptional milestone by earning an Emmy, a Grammy (for the best spoken comedy album “The 2000 Year Old Man in the Year 2000”), a Tony Award for his Broadway rendition of the 1968 film “The Producers,” and multiple Oscars.
Famous actor and filmmaker Judd Apatow not only shines on screen but also penned down his extraordinary experiences in the entertainment industry through his memoir titled “All About Me!: My Unforgettable Journey in Show Business.” To his credit, Apatow has produced some notable movies such as “Anchorman,” “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Talladega Nights,” “Knocked Up,” and “Bridesmaids.”
Apatow Productions is currently working on the romantic comedy “Bros” with Billy Eichner, along with the projects “Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain” and “Flipside.”)
