Tributes keep coming after the unexpected passing of the Academy Award-winning actor. Although he was famed for his powerful, sometimes chilling roles in films like “Unforgiven” and “The French Connection”, he wasn’t shy about bringing laughter to the screen as well. Notably, he worked with esteemed director Mel Brooks on the 1974 horror-comedy gem, “Young Frankenstein”.
Brooks recently expressed his appreciation for the actor, using Twitter to reminisce about their shared work experience. He referred to Hackman as an ideal fit for the character of the blind hermit named Harold.
I consider myself fortunate for having had the pleasure of knowing Gene Hackman, as he shared a common name with another renowned actor, Gene Wilder. It was this Gene who informed him about a small role called The Blind Hermit in our film ‘YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. He inquired, ‘Do you think Mel would allow me to play it? I’ve always wanted to try comedy.’ Unsurprisingly, I was ecstatic, and he proved to be just right for the part.
