As a seasoned movie buff with decades of film history under my belt, I find myself intrigued by Mel Gibson’s latest ventures. With his hands full as a writer, director, actor, and producer, it seems the man never rests! His upcoming projects, including the captivating tale of the Siege of Malta, leave me eager to see how he weaves his magic yet again.
In a recent interview for the captivating movie “Monster Summer,” Mel Gibson mentioned his recent visit to Malta for location scouting. This trip has been reported as being for the sequel to “The Passion of the Christ.” However, if Gibson is merely fooling us, it’s an intricate and fascinating distraction. When questioned about his Maltese journey (where he met Prime Minister Robert Abela) and the progress of the religious drama, Gibson casually discussed the project’s direction.
“Sure, well, there’s that, but there’s also — I’m also working on a
TV limited series about the Siege of Malta, which is an incredible story
, and there’s only one place to film that, I mean, in Malta. Because that’s where it happened, at these fortresses where 700 knights defended Malta against an onslaught from the Turkish and Suleiman sent 40,000 men and ships and, wow, the knights won. So, it’s a pretty crazy, great story.”
When inquired about his role given the diverse positions he holds as a writer, director, performer, and producer (specifically since Gibson’s case), he responded succinctly:
I’d love to be involved, but I’m unsure if my schedule allows for it. However, I have ambitions to take on a producer role, and I’ve collaborated with an exceptionally gifted writer on the script. It promises to be a hit, given its compelling narrative, though I understand that someone else will ultimately reap the benefits.
Mel Gibson Is a Busy Man
In essence, when Gibson mentions he might not have the time, it’s not an empty statement. Over the past few years, he has been a highly active actor, appearing in numerous films such as Last Looks, Panama, Bandit, Hot Seat, Father Stu, Agent Game, On the Line, Desperation Road, Confidential Informant, Boneyard, and the upcoming Monster Summer. Furthermore, he directed the much-awaited thriller Flight Risk, featuring Mark Wahlberg, Topher Grace, and Michelle Dockery, which was pushed back to a January 2025 release date. To add to his busy schedule, there’s also Lethal Weapon 5 in the pipeline.
Of course, there’s also his continuation of The Passion of the Christ, one of the most successful films ever made (and one of the most visceral and, to many, powerful). There have been reports that filming for the follow-up will begin in 2025 after he finishes his press tour for Flight Risk in January. Whether he’ll film it in Malta (and perhaps film it simultaneously with this limited series) is still not guaranteed. It’s hard to guarantee much of anything; you know what they say, one way to make God laugh is to tell God your plans. So we’ll have to see what comes of this series with Mel’s Maltese batallion and if it’s really the stuff that dreams are made of.
During this period, you’ll find the movie titled “Monster Summer“. In it, Gibson portrays a grumpy yet sympathetic retiree who gradually forms a bond with a young baseball enthusiast (Mason Thames from The Black Phone) who suspects that a monster is draining the spirits of his friends. This enjoyable film has a nostalgic feel, reminiscent of movies like “Hocus Pocus, Fright Night“, and those produced by Amblin. Monster Summer is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024.
