Mel Gibson disclosed that his Malibu residence was destroyed during the Los Angeles wildfires, as he was in Austin at the time, engaged in a podcast conversation with Joe Rogan.
During a call on Elizabeth Vargas Reports on NewsNation, the actor known for Mad Max expressed a positive outlook while discussing the painful experience of losing his home he had lived in for over a decade. “It’s really tough,” Gibson told host Elizabeth Vargas, “Living somewhere for so long and then having to leave it all behind is emotional.” He further added, “You remember George Carlin talking about our possessions? Well, I had a lot of those there. Now, it feels like I’ve been freed from the weight of my belongings because everything is now reduced to ashes.
When questioned about his whereabouts during the fire that destroyed his house, Gibson explained he was in Austin, Texas, at the time, recording an episode for the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. “I was taping the Rogan podcast… and I must admit, I felt uneasy while we were talking because I knew my neighborhood was ablaze, so I wondered if my place was still standing. However, upon returning home, unfortunately, it wasn’t there. I returned home and thought to myself, at least I won’t have any annoying plumbing issues anymore.
Gibson shared that his wife, Rosalind Ross, along with their son, Lars, had safely evacuated their residence. He further mentioned that Ed Harris’ home, located near Gibson’s, was unfortunately destroyed by the fire. Yet, amidst the destruction, Gibson expressed relief as his chickens managed to survive the blaze.
Prompted by Vargas, the actor from Braveheart shared additional details about his losses in the fire. “I had a great deal of personal belongings there, items like photographs, files, and various other personal effects, along with clothing, some quite unique,” Gibson explained. “Sure, these are just things, and fortunately, they can be replaced.” He continued, “The positive aspect is that everyone in my family, as well as those I care about, are safe, healthy, and far from danger. That’s all that truly matters to me.
