Melissa Barrera Exits WME

As a devoted fan who has followed Melissa Barrera‘s journey since her breakout role in “In the Heights,” I must say, it’s always bittersweet to witness changes in an artist’s professional life. Melissa has shown immense talent and resilience, weathering storms both on and off-screen.

Melissa Barrera and WME have parted ways.

According to a source, Barriera is no longer working at the agency now that the celebrity has chosen to leave. However, she continues to be managed by Sugar23, Imprint PR, and the legal firm Gang Tyre.

This year, the actress appeared in a vampire film titled “Abigail,” produced by Universal Pictures, alongside Kathryn Newton and Dan Stevens. The movie was helmed by co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

The pair responsible for film direction worked with Barrera on the 2022 version of “Scream” as well as its sequel, “Scream VI”. However, Barrera was let go from the franchise last year due to controversial social media posts about the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Initial speculation upon Mira Sorvino’s departure from “Scream” indicated potential termination by WME due to her stance, but according to her statements made earlier this year to The Hollywood Reporter, she feels backed by her representatives.

She shared with THR that it was indeed challenging, as her thoughts were rather hazy, but she considered herself incredibly fortunate,” she said. “I received an abundance of support from those close to me – my team, particularly my publicists – who essentially bore the weight for me.

Additionally, Barrera appeared in the horror-comedy movie titled “Your Monster,” which was released in October by Vertical Entertainment following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Upcoming, she will appear alongside Simu Liu in the Peacock suspenseful series entitled “Copenhagen.

She’s also known for roles in movies like “In the Heights” and “Carmen”, as well as the Netflix show titled “Keep Breathing”.

Barrera originated her role of Sam Carpenter in the 2022 film Scream that helped revitalize the slasher franchise. Following the success of 2023’s Scream VI, the series is getting another refresh after the exits of Barrera and Jenna Ortega were made public late last year. Kevin Williamson, who penned the script for the original 1996 Scream, is directing the forthcoming seventh movie that is being made by Spyglass Entertainment.

Deadline was first to report Barrera’s WME exit.
