In an unforeseen yet thrilling partnership, Brazilian funk artist MC Hariel and Dutch footballer Memphis Depay have teamed up to produce a four-track EP named “FALANDO COM AS FAVELAS” (Speaking with the Favelas). This one-of-a-kind project signifies Depay’s entrance into the Brazilian music world, and underscores the increasing overlap between sports, music, and social awareness.
Depay, who plays for Corinthians and boasts a past with prestigious teams such as Manchester United, Barcelona, and Atlético de Madrid, has always harbored a deep love for music. Through the mediation of their mutual acquaintance DJ Nine, a dynamic creative partnership unfolded. In their initial encounter, they produced an astonishing trio of songs. This collaboration propelled them on a voyage that carried them from the bustling favelas of São Paulo to the vibrant streets of Ghana, where they shot a music video for the EP’s main track. This cultural exchange broadened their artistic perspective and imbued the EP with a compelling narrative of resilience and triumph.
Speaking with the Favelas showcases the strength of music in bridging gaps between various communities. This EP embodies a harmonious blend of Hariel’s distinctive funk beats combined with Depay’s global influences, resulting in an exceptional sound that appeals to followers of both musicians. A notable track, “Peita do Coringão,” pays homage to the Corinthians supporters and includes guest collaborations from producer Perera and MC Marks.
