Despite the immense success and enduring fame of the 1997 sci-fi film (earning $584 million globally), it seems there were a few production hiccups. Sonnenfeld vividly recounted one instance where Smith and Lee found themselves stuck inside a pod to film scenes involving the movie’s shape-shifting car.
In the podcast, Sonnenfeld shared an incident where he mentioned there were precautions to keep it from opening and collapsing. He then said, ‘Action!’ and heard Will Smith exclaim, ‘Oh dear God, I’m sorry. Tommy, I’m sorry. Baz, bring the ladder.’ Tomty responded calmly, ‘It’s alright, Will. No worries, Will. Don’t worry, Will.’ The situation was that Will Smith had a habit of passing gas. It’s just some people are like that. And trust me, you wouldn’t want to be enclosed in a tiny, air-tight space with a Will Smith fart. Even sitting next to him at the Disney ranch would not be ideal.
We vacated the stage for approximately three hours, which is quite remarkable. By the way, he’s a splendid individual, but let me tell you, he has certain… gas issues. Some people have them, others don’t.

Reflecting on my career, I almost missed out on the iconic incident that has since become a cinematic legend – the near-disaster in “Men in Black”. You see, after the triumph of Roland Emmerich’s alien epic, “Independence Day”, the offer for another extraterrestrial adventure in “Men in Black” came my way. Initially hesitant about starring in two consecutive alien films due to concerns over typecasting, I was eventually persuaded by the film’s producer, the legendary Steven Spielberg. His convincing arguments ultimately led me to accept the role, setting in motion a chain of events that would forever link my destiny with the infamous flatulence scene – and apparently, Lee Jones’ as well.
Despite Smith’s awkward incident causing a blush, it appears that the occurrence didn’t affect his bond with his co-workers. Both actors continued to work together in all subsequent Men in Black films—regrettably, none of the sequels matched the success of the initial release.
