Lyle and Erik Menendez have recently altered their stance concerning Ryan Murphy’s series titled “Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez.
Following his harsh criticism of the Netflix series released in September last year, Lyle has now expressed on the TMZ podcast “2 Angry Men” that the show, titled “Monsters,” truly touched many people, helping them to empathize with the childhood traumas Erik and he experienced.
This true-crime series narrates the story of two brothers, Lyle and Erik, who were found guilty in 1996 for the murder of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez.
As a dedicated fan, I managed to catch most of the nine-episode series, and I’ve also seen countless snippets of it on TV. Plus, I’ve had plenty of conversations centered around it.
As a fan, I find it remarkable – the extensive reach of the media and Ryan Murphy’s project has been nothing short of astounding. It truly resonated with many, offering an insight into the traumatic experiences Erik and I endured in our childhood, especially the harrowing ordeals that Erik faced.
Lyle praised both Nicholas Chavez’s self-portrait and Cooper Koch’s performance as Erik, saying it was remarkably impressive.
In essence, this situation made many people realize that even wealthy households can face such issues – hidden away within private properties, fenced-in gardens, and well-kept lawns. I believe this revelation has broadened the perspectives of many, which is always beneficial. Abuse, as my brother mentioned, often thrives in secrecy, in the shadows of society. However, when we shine a light on it, the instances of bullying and trauma are more likely to find healing or resolution.
Lyle summarized, “In essence, Ryan Murphy completed his project, and that’s what he did. Thus, I believe we should acknowledge this and express our gratitude.

A short while after the release of Monsters on Netflix, Erik expressed a statement criticizing the series for its misleading depiction of the events surrounding our crime. He stated that it had moved the raw truths further away by several steps. At that time, he also noted that Murphy was crafting his disturbing storyline through despicable and offensive characterizations of Lyle and himself, as well as spreading disheartening slander.
Later on, Murphy justified his series by stating, “What’s intriguing that Erik omits in his statement is that approximately 60 to 65% of our show, both in the scripted versions and the filmed form, revolve around the alleged abuse they experienced. We handle this sensitive topic with care, providing a platform for their voices, and allowing them to openly discuss it. In today’s era, where people can freely speak about sexual abuse, addressing such topics, writing about different perspectives, and expressing various opinions can spark controversy.
The Menendez brothers, who have spent 35 years behind bars, are seeking a route to freedom with fresh evidence, discussions about executive clemency, and an impending re-sentencing following the removal of the district attorney in Los Angeles. Nevertheless, the new DA, Nathan Hochman, expressed his opposition towards granting Lyle and Erik a new trial for the 1989 murders of their parents, although he has yet to decide on whether he will back their request for re-sentencing.
