As a connoisseur of contemporary art with a penchant for the unconventional and a soft spot for works that delve deep into societal nuances, I must say that Meriem Bennani’s new solo exhibition at Fondazione Prada’s Milan outpost has left me utterly spellbound. Having traversed the labyrinthine world of YouTube videos, reality TV, and high-production aesthetics, the multi-sensory wonderland of For My Best Family is an audacious testament to the artist’s ingenuity and artistic prowess.
Meriem Bennani’s latest solo exhibition, titled “For My Best Family“, has recently been unveiled at Fondazione Prada in Milan. Drawing inspiration from YouTube videos, reality TV shows, and high-end visual styles, this immersive exhibit represents the most expansive project undertaken by the artist up to now.
The show spans over two floors of the Podium, presenting a colossal moving sculpture and an animated movie. On the first level, you’ll find the installation named “Sole Crashing,” which showcases 192 pairs of flip-flops and slippers swaying in sync with a lively blend of traditional Moroccan rhythms created by Reda Senhaji, popularly known as Cheb Runner. Meanwhile, on another part, “For Aicha,” a collaboration between Orian Barki, is shown. This animation delves into the tender bond shared by a mother and daughter, narrated through the unique perspective of animated jackals. Both pieces, using realistic, autobiographical, and fictional storytelling techniques, engage in a humorous and harmonious dialogue with each other.
As I delve into the world of For My Best Family, I ponder on the artist’s central focus: how to stay connected as a family unit. This intrigue leads me to question the boundaries between us, the individuals, and our collective identity. Throughout this exhibit, this curiosity gleams with breathtaking brightness. The artist, Bennani, masterfully encapsulates the stunning harmony of our individual voices blending into one harmonious chorus, symbolizing our shared existence.
The exhibition is now on view in Milan through February 24, 2025.
