Meta, the large player in social media, declared on April 15 their plans to broaden the Quest services offered at a corporate level into the field of education.
Based on Statista’s data, Quest virtual reality headsets from the company are currently the undisputed leaders in the extended reality (XR) market. The XR industry is projected to reach over 34 million installed devices by the end of 2024.
Should the forecast be accurate, the virtual reality industry has seen a yearly growth of approximately 27.3% since 2020. At that time, Statista reported around 14.2 million users with installed VR systems worldwide.
Meta, in an effort to maintain its dominant role, has introduced a variety of business-focused services and offerings tailored for the enterprise metaverse sector. This shift marks a departure from creating personalized experiences such as games and unique immersive environments.
Meta’s global affairs chief, Nick Clegg, announced in a blog that later in the year, Meta will introduce an educational version of their Quest devices.
Teachers, trainers, and administrators will have the ability to use a variety of educational apps and functions through this, and they can control several Quest devices simultaneously. The requirement for individual updates and preparations for each device in a learning setting is eliminated.
The new product is expected to be introduced “within the next few months,” while its official release is planned for the end of 2024. This product will be available in the Quest for Business marketplace, which covers most European, Australian, Canadian, Japanese, New Zealand, and American markets, as stated in the blog post.
Meta offers numerous examples of educational institutions that currently utilize Quest headsets: The University of Glasgow’s life sciences program lets students explore the intricacies of the human body in an immersive way; New Mexico State’s criminal justice course transports users into a virtual crime scene; and Stanford University’s business class prepares students for interviews through realistic simulations.
