Meta, Universal Music Group to Allow Users to Share Songs on WhatsApp

As a seasoned gamer with a background in music production and copyright law, I find this partnership between Universal Music Group (UMG) and Meta truly groundbreaking! It’s like witnessing the symphony of the digital age where creativity meets technology, all while ensuring fair compensation to artists – something that resonates deeply within me.

For the first time, Universal Music Group has secured a licensing agreement with Meta, enabling songs from their artists to be posted on WhatsApp for sharing without infringing upon copyright rights.

As a long-time user of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, I am thrilled to hear about the recent expansion of the global licensing agreement between Universal Music Group (UMG) and Meta. This agreement will allow UMG artists and songwriters to continue sharing their copyrighted music across various Meta platforms, including Horizon and Threads.

In the process of renewing contracts, UMG artists and songwriters will now earn a portion of ad income generated by their licensed songs being featured in Meta creators’ posts.

WhatsApp is planning to include licensed music, a move that follows Universal Music Group (UMG), under the leadership of CEO Lucian Grainge, in their efforts to prevent unauthorized use of music, particularly AI-generated content, thereby protecting the rights of their musicians and composers.

Michael Nash, Digital Chief and Executive Vice President of UMG, expressed his pleasure that Meta aligns with UMG’s artist-focused perspective on valuing human creativity and fairly compensating artists and composers. He is excited about further collaboration to tackle AI-generated content issues that might impact artists and composers, ensuring UMG can safeguard their rights, not just now but also in the future.

Instead of creating a subscription-based streaming service similar to Apple Music or Spotify, Meta has opted to include licensed music content on their platforms, as part of their agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG).

In May 2024, Universal Music Group (UMG) finalized a new music licensing agreement with TikTok, resolving their disagreement over the payment of royalties associated with content on the social media platform. These licensing contracts are designed to fairly compensate artists and songwriters for the employment of artificial intelligence within the entertainment industry, both online and elsewhere.
