My discomfort towards insects, spiders, and other small creatures is so slight it’s almost non-existent. Just mentioning them makes me imagine them crawling on my body, which I’d rather avoid. So, acting in a movie with bugs isn’t really my cup of tea – but I must admit, I have great respect for Michael Cera, who managed to find an intriguing perspective while dealing with the creatures during the filming of The Phoenician Scheme.
In the latest film by Wes Anderson, Cerveris portrays Bjørn Lund, who is both a tutor and an administrative assistant to Benicio del Toro’s character Zsa-Zsa Korda. Bjørn has a history in entomology, which means you’ll often see him handling various insects and arachnids throughout the movie. I had the chance to talk to him about this unique aspect of his role during the online press day for “The Phoenician Scheme” (alongside del Toro and Mia Threapleton), and he mentioned that initially, he felt a bit anxious about it, but he grew more comfortable once he changed his perspective on these creatures.
Initially, you might feel somewhat anxious about it, but with time as you gently handle creatures such as a praying mantis, you begin to feel quite protective towards them. They are fragile and timid, so in that instant, you assume the role of their guardian or caretaker.

Temporarily setting aside my own fear or apprehension towards insects allows me to acknowledge their delicate nature. Despite being swift and potentially harmful, they’re incredibly small and fragile. That’s why we use the phrase “as useful as a bug on a rug”. It’s no surprise that Michael Cera feels a sense of responsibility when handling them, given their care is often entrusted to specialized handlers on film sets.
It was beneficial for the actor that his roles in “The Phoenician Scheme” did not require him to be overrun or enclosed by creatures; instead, he portrayed a character who managed various insects like a scientist or teacher. There’s a scene where he handles a tarantula (which is my worst nightmare), but Cera hinted that he remained composed because the spider was too.
And the tarantula… they didn’t give me like a Johnny Carson tarantula that runs up your [arm].
Mia Threapleton even referred to the tarantula as “surprisingly cute” and admitted she forgot the specific name she’d given it.
If you haven’t had a chance to witness Michael Cera’s bug-handling act personally, the movie “The Phoenician Scheme” is currently screening in cinemas nationwide. This film boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes not just Cera, Benicio del Toro, and Mia Threapleton, but also Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Scarlett Johansson, and others.
