Michael Gerety, a former distribution executive at MGM and renowned publicist for stars such as Julie Andrews, James Garner, and Chuck Norris, passed away on Monday in Los Angeles. He was 82 years old.
On October 30, 1942, Gerety was born in Freeport, Long Island, and spent his childhood there. After serving in the U.S. Navy abroad, he joined MGM in 1965 as a regional advertising and publicity representative, working in Chicago, Atlanta, and Dallas.

For a short while, he departed from MGM to take up a role as district manager at Durwood Theaters, which was embarking on a nationwide expansion (the theaters would later become renowned as AMC Theaters). After a year had passed, Gerety returned to MGM and shifted his position to their Culver City studios in 1972. He continued working there until the merger with United Artists took place.
After MGM’s theatrical distribution division was disbanded, he shifted his focus to American International Pictures instead.
In 1981, Gerety took on the role as president at Newslink Corporation, a pioneering digital platform for video-based news text services. This service significantly transformed the method of collecting and rapidly sharing entertainment news.
In the year 1985, Gerety moved to the Hanson & Schwam Public Relations firm based in Beverly Hills. His clientele at this new position also encompassed Lionel Chetwynd, a renowned writer, producer, and director, as well as Dean Hargrove, another distinguished writer and producer.
In 1999, he departed from the company with the position of Executive Vice President, and then spent the following five years working individually under his own MGPR brand.
His surviving family members consist of his wife, Barbara, along with their son Patrick who’s employed at Netflix within the awards and talent department, daughter Katherine, and grandkids Westley and Faye. Additionally, he leaves behind his sisters Sheila and David.
