As a cinephile with a deep appreciation for authenticity and emotional depth in storytelling, I find myself profoundly moved by the dedication of Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein to portray Parkinson’s Disease accurately and upliftingly in their show ‘Shrinking.’ Their personal connection to the illness through their fathers’ diagnoses and Michael J. Fox as a mentor and inspiration makes their commitment even more heartfelt.
The way they approach the subject matter with hope and honesty resonates deeply, reminding me of my own experiences in dealing with loss and chronic illness in my family. The portrayal of Jimmy Laird’s (Jason Segel) journey through grief and his relationship with coworkers, including Harrison Ford’s Paul, who is diagnosed with Parkinson’s during the first season, feels authentic and relatable.
I am particularly impressed by Lawrence’s focus on hope and optimism in the show, as it aligns with my own perspective that even in the face of adversity, there is always room for inspiration and growth. I eagerly await future seasons of ‘Shrinking,’ hoping to see more of its powerful portrayal of Parkinson’s Disease and the resilience of the human spirit.
And as a final thought, I can’t help but chuckle at the irony that a show about shrinking people might actually be expanding my own heart with empathy and understanding.
Bill Lawrence, one of the creators, is committed to portraying Parkinson’s Disease accurately and positively on the show. During a talk at “An Evening with Shrinking at PaleyLive,” Lawrence shared with People his and co-creator Brett Goldstein’s personal connection to the illness: both of their fathers have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Furthermore, Lawrence mentioned his “first mentor” as a source of inspiration for the show’s portrayal of the neurological disorder. Lawrence stated:
It’s great to express thoughts on topics that matter to me today, with Michael J. Fox serving as my initial guide. We aim to portray this experience in a motivating manner, avoiding any hint of sorrow or tragedy.
He added:
My initial role model, Michael J Fox, has been incredibly inspiring in both my personal and professional life. His resilience and unwavering dedication are beyond compare. We aim to embody some of his spirit in our production.
In 1991, Fox received a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, a condition that affects movement, balance, and coordination over time. He kept this private until 1998. During this period, he was acting on the TV show “Spin City,” which Lawrence and Gary David Goldberg co-created. This political sitcom ran on ABC from 1996 to 2002. Fox left the series after its fourth season but came back for its sixth and final season in a guest role.
After making an appearance on “Scrubs” during its third season, Fox didn’t slow down but instead dedicated his efforts to advocating for Parkinson’s Disease. In 2000, he established The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, a charitable organization with the mission of discovering a cure for this disease. This foundation prioritizes funding research and developing advanced therapies, making it the world’s foremost non-profit supporter of Parkinson’s research.
‘Shrinking’ Explores Parkinson’s with Hope and Honesty
The story unfolds around Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel), a therapist dealing with grief, as he manages his personal and professional life. This includes interactions with his boss Paul (Harrison Ford), colleagues, friends, and neighbors. In the first season finale, Paul was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In portraying this condition, Lawrence aims to convey a hopeful and optimistic tone through his writing. He expressed:
“I suck in the inspiring people around me, and I steal from them as much as I possibly can.
At the gathering, Ford discussed his character portrayal as Paul, emphasizing that he approaches the responsibility of depicting Paul’s life with Parkinson’s disease with utmost gravity and sincerity.
Some individuals have the unique ability to handle challenging experiences with poise, bravery, and a touch of insight. In other words, they are exceptionally skilled at expressing their feelings, a skill that we believe is valuable for our audience to hear about.
The second season of the show “Shrinking” premiered on Apple TV+ on Christmas Day, but Lawrence has already started thinking about Season 3. In fact, he shared that for the upcoming season, his focus is on depicting what it’s like to live with Parkinson’s disease. The series stars Jason Segel, Cristo Ford, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Christa Miller, and Ted McGinley, and can be streamed on Apple TV+.
