Michael Jackson Biopic in Flux as Filmmakers Mull Splitting Movie in Two

Last year at CinemaCon, Lionsgate ended its Las Vegas showcase with an unexpected, extended sneak peek of the movie titled “Michael“. The footage shown generated a concert-like ambiance at Caesar’s Palace Coliseum and received a favorable reaction. Producer Graham King disclosed that the Michael Jackson biopic would incorporate around 30 songs and boast an extended runtime to appropriately portray the tale of the late pop icon.

Currently, King and his team are considering an innovative direction for the project, which involves extending the main character’s on-screen narrative over two movies instead of one. However, this concept is still at a nascent stage, according to insider information shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

The upcoming speculation regarding a potential split of Jackson’s movies into two parts arises following production troubles hinted at in a January report from Puck. This report highlighted that the third act required revisions due to its portrayal of a Jackson accuser, who had previously reached a settlement with the estate, ensuring he would not be dramatized. (According to Puck, the estate may have overlooked this agreement when giving approval for the film, which they are supporting.) By potentially dividing the movie, the filmmakers might gain more time to address this problem.

The king is reportedly advocating for this particular choice. However, transitioning from a single movie to two might necessitate approval from various collaborators, such as the Jackson estate, Lionsgate (the U.S. distributor), and Universal (the international distributor). Although the plans are still in their early stages, it seems that the original October 3 release date may need to be adjusted to accommodate changes for the new format.

Lionsgate and King did not respond to requests for comment.

Antoine Fuqua is directing the movie “Michael,” featuring Jaafar Jackson, who’s the nephew of the late music legend. Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo complete the cast. The film is under the guidance of scriptwriter John Logan, with King, John Branca, and John McClain serving as producers. Originally set for release in April 2025, the project has been delayed by six months and is now scheduled for October instead.

During the Tuesday afternoon CinemaCon talk, Lionsgate chose not to reveal any clips from the upcoming film and no specific release date was provided by Motion Picture Group head Adam Fogelson as he discussed the project.

Since we first showcased a few initial clips of Michael at CinemaCon last year, it’s become evident just how much worldwide curiosity and excitement surrounds this project,” Fogelson expressed from the Las Vegas stage. “A lot has transpired since then, but we’re not quite prepared to reveal more details yet. However, we promise there are some major and thrilling announcements on the horizon, so hang in there and keep an eye out for updates.
