As a passionate movie enthusiast, I traded the unconventional and zany character I played in Beetlejuice for an entirely distinct persona in my second 2024 release titled Goodrich. In the span of just two months, this was my second theatrical venture, offering viewers a more tender and heartfelt comedy that delved into the complexities of parenting and family dynamics. Initially underperforming at the box office, it has now made a remarkable comeback, topping the charts on Max.
In my perspective, I’m captivated by the movie “Goodrich,” skillfully directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer. This tale revolves around Andy Goodrich, an art dealer who unexpectedly finds himself caring for his nine-year-old twins when his younger spouse checks into rehab. Being out of touch with parenting duties, Andy is compelled to reach out to Grace, his daughter from a prior relationship (played by Mila Kunis), for aid. As they navigate through the journey of reconnecting their family bonds that had become distant, they discover the profound essence of family ties when they seem to be fraying.
On October 18, the film didn’t make much impact in cinemas, however it received praise from both critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The Tomatometer stands at 81%, with the Popcornmeter slightly higher at 85%. Given Keaton’s popularity over the years, the movie’s underwhelming box office performance was unexpected. Yet, streaming platforms have shown to be a solution for such issues in the past, as demonstrated once more.
Michael Keaton Loved Goodrich, and So Do Audiences
From his initial foray into eccentric comedies, through his award-winning performance in “Birdman,” and let’s not forget his tenure as Batman – Keaton has amassed a variety of roles that have endeared him to many in Hollywood. Interestingly, when presented with the opportunity to delve back into a more nuanced and understated role like the one in “Goodrich,” Keaton showed no reluctance in revisiting a type of character he hadn’t portrayed in quite some time. In an interview with Moviefone, Keaton shared his enthusiasm for the role of Andy, stating that he was quickly convinced by it.
As soon as I started reading it, I felt I had already invested myself halfway due to my thought: ‘This writing is excellent and I’m really enjoying it.’ Moreover, it had been a while since I encountered something similar, making it an easy fit. To put it simply, it wasn’t too far removed from my usual preferences. Admittedly, this was quite unlike me in many aspects, but not significantly so. In fact, after just one or possibly two meetings with her, I became even more inclined to participate.
On October 8, 2024, the premiere of Goodrich took place, eliciting a generally favorable response. This appreciation was particularly noticeable with regards to Keaton’s performance, which received unanimous praise, even from critics who may not have been as fond of the movie overall. Now, viewers are rediscovering Goodrich on streaming platforms, and it currently holds the top spot on Max, indicating that the film is finally receiving the recognition it warrants.
