As a devoted fan of the eccentric and captivating world of Tim Burton, I have been eagerly awaiting the return of Beetlejuice for years. And now, with Michael Keaton reprising his iconic role, it feels like a dream come true!
In an upcoming revival of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, Michael Keaton’s character will once again unleash chaos. However, there are rumors that the filmmakers might soften the rough edges of the main character to appeal to contemporary audiences. Keaton has recently spoken about this in an interview with GQ, discussing whether the character will be made more “socially acceptable” or “politically correct.”
Regarding his character, there wasn’t much change needed since the original. Beetlejuice, a debauched and unrefined character from 1988, maintains that same image even in today’s more progressive times.
He’s a thing. He’s more of a thing than a he or a she, he’s more of an it. And I’m not saying ‘it’ to be politically correct. I just viewed it as a force more than anything. I mean, there’s definitely strong male energy, like stupid male energy, which I love. You don’t want to touch that because it’s not like you go, ‘Well, it’s a new year and this thing would now act like that.’”
As stated by Keaton, Beetlejuice will retain its original essence when the sequel premieres in theaters next month, with the actor assuring that it will continue to be as outrageous and twisted as it has always been. This news should undoubtedly bring relief to some devoted fans.
Beetlejuice Won’t Be In the Sequel Much, According to Michael Keaton
In addition to preserving his cunning demeanor and charm reminiscent of over three decades past, Michael Keaton shared that, much like the initial film, the character Beetlejuice won’t have a significant presence in the upcoming movie. The titular character is expected to have approximately 17 minutes of screen time in the original production, and Keaton predicts that the sequel will follow suit, with Beetlejuice not serving as the primary storyteller.
The concept here was not to overload it with Beetlejuice, as that would ruin it. I believe the character of Beetlejuice doesn’t propel the narrative as much as he did in the initial film. Instead, in this version, Beetlejuice is more integrated into the plot, serving as a part of the storyline rather than being the main force driving the movie like in the first one. This new movie leans more on the overall story progression, with Beetlejuice playing a supporting role.
Under the guidance of director Tim Burton, “Beetlejuice” once again stars Michael Keaton in the lead role. Joining him in this supernatural journey are actors such as Jenna Ortega, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, and Willem Dafoe. Together they embark on an exciting exploration of the afterlife.
