As a devoted cinephile who has been fortunate enough to attend countless screenings and events throughout my years of movie-loving, I can confidently say that the recent appearance of Michael Mann at the American Cinematheque showing of Miami Vice was nothing short of extraordinary. The atmosphere was electric, the energy palpable, as we gathered to pay tribute to one of the most visionary filmmakers of our time.
Fans of Michael Mann were pleasantly surprised at a packed screening of “Miami Vice” at the American Cinematheque, as the director himself unexpectedly appeared at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre on Saturday night.
Mann participated in a vibrant post-screening discussion with film writers and critics Katie Walsh and Blake Howard, who co-host the Miami Nice podcast that centered around Mann’s 2006 feature starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. It is said that several attendees traveled to Los Angeles specifically for this event, with Howard being one of them. The host of another Mann-focused podcast, One Heat Minute, made a trip from his home in Australia especially for the exclusive screening. The screening was presented as part of American Cinematheque’s Friends of the Fest series and was shown in 35mm format.
In the gaming world, I’m a detective, just like Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett from Universal Pictures’ “Miami Vice.” We were tasked with solving the gruesome murders of two federal agents, a mission that eventually led us deep into the dangerous realm of drug trafficking. The allure was tempting, but the danger was real.
At the Q&A session, Mann delved back into his movie production and discussed extensively about the influences behind transforming the renowned TV series into a film, sharing fascinating behind-the-scenes stories like how they filmed during summer, coinciding with one of the most turbulent hurricane seasons. As per numerous accounts, the cinema enthusiasts erupted in excitement when Mann arrived, offering him a warm reception that could only be described as a hero’s welcome. Based on online recordings from the event, he also shared some insights about Heat 2, mentioning that he spends every week working diligently on the script.
Overflowing with heartfelt appreciation and love this weekend 💖 I’d like to express my sincere thanks to @OneBlakeMinute for being such an inspiring individual. A huge shoutout to @am_cinematheque for providing a breathtaking screening experience. Thanks also to the talented @michaelmann for graciously giving your time, and for creating movies that touch our souls. Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to the passionate LA cinephiles who made the event a sell-out success and brought the energy to life!
