Michel Gondry, Pharrell Williams Musical Gets Title, High-Profile May 2025 Release Date

As a gamer with a penchant for movies that seamlessly blend reality and fantasy, the announcement of Michel Gondry and Pharrell Williams‘ project, “Atlantis,” has me absolutely ecstatic! Having grown up in the 80s and 90s, I can only imagine the musical magic that awaits us when the duo brings to life a coming-of-age story set in Virginia Beach during the summer of ’77.

Michel Gondry and Pharrell Williams are headed for Atlantis.

The title officially announced by the studio for their highly anticipated Universal musical set to hit cinemas on May 9, 2025, is what we’ll be hearing in theaters.

Universal revealed that the upcoming movie will include tunes from Williams as well as the award-winning pair Benji Pasek and Justin Paul, who have previously worked on hit films like “The Greatest Showman” and “La La Land.”

The story about growing up takes place in Virginia Beach during the summer of 1977, drawing inspiration from the Atlantis Apartments, where Williams spent his childhood years. Gondry, who has previously directed films such as “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “The Science of Sleep”, is at the helm of this project based on a script written by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson.

The stellar ensemble we earlier disclosed encompasses Janelle Monáe, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Missy Elliott, Tim Meadows, Anderson .Paak, HeJayson Lee (likely a typo for Jayson Lee), and also includes Jamilah Rosemond and Jaboukie Young-White.

The series “Atlantis” is created by Emmy award winner Mimi Valdés (known for “Hidden Figures” and “Harlem”), as well as Gil Netter, a two-time Oscar nominee for Best Picture (“Life of Pi” and “The Blind Side”).

The movie is overseen by a team consisting of Matthew Hirsch, Raffi Adlan, Jennie Lee, Shani Saxon, Michael Mayer, and the duo known as Pasek and Paul.
