Mickey 17 Director Reveals Real Reason Behind The Movie's Initial Release Delay

As a dedicated cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of Bong Joon-ho’s cinematic universe, I can confidently say that his upcoming masterpiece, Mickey 17, is shaping up to be a truly extraordinary addition to his already impressive oeuvre. Having followed his career since The Host and Snowpiercer, I have come to appreciate his unique ability to weave complex themes through genre-bending storytelling.

Initially scheduled for a 2024 premiere, then postponed indefinitely, and now set to hit theaters on January 31, 2025, Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming science fiction comedy “Mickey 17” has had a bumpy ride. In an interview with Empire Online, the director revealed that the delays were due to his desire to maintain final cut rights for the film. Known for his detail-oriented filmmaking style, it makes sense that he would want the creative freedom to present his work as originally envisioned for the audience. In the interview, Bong Joon-ho expressed his contentment and gratitude for the extra time given to perfect the editing process.

I had the privilege of having the final say in editing Okja and Mickey 17, as per our agreement. The studio honored my right to make the final cut. Throughout the editing phase, there were various viewpoints and conversations. However, this movie is my vision, and I’m thrilled about it. The process was lengthy but always ran smoothly and respectfully.

As a film enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming movie adaptation of “Mickey7,” penned by Edward Ashton in 2022. In this captivating tale, we follow the gripping journey of Mickey Barnes (portrayed by Robert Pattinson), an ordinary man with an extraordinary role – an expendable human chosen for a mission to colonize the frigid planet Niflheim. The twist? When one version of him perishes, another clone springs to life, retaining all memories from the original. However, when one of these copies miraculously survives, it sets off a chain reaction that propels Mickey towards a confrontation with his counterpart, Mickey 18.

Mickey 17 is Bong Joon Ho’s First Film in Five Years

In the film world, Bong Joon-ho has become a well-known and exceptionally gifted director. He’s renowned for his knack for tackling intricate themes and genres in imaginative ways. His earlier works like The Host, the suspenseful dystopia Snowpiercer, and 2017’s Okja, garnered significant attention due to their original narratives and thought-provoking social insights. However, it was the 2019 release of Parasite that propelled Bong Joon-ho into global stardom. This film dominated at the Oscars, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, making Bong Joon-ho the first South Korean director to achieve such a remarkable feat.

In a span of five years since the release of Parasite, director Bong Joon-ho makes his comeback to feature filmmaking with Mickey 17. The style of Mickey 17 echoes his past works, blending elements of sci-fi, thriller, adventure, and drama. Bold visuals and unconventional storytelling are not foreign to him as he continues to push boundaries. Actor Robert Pattinson, starring in Mickey 17, expresses nothing but respect for the director’s unique and unprecedented style. He remarked:

It’s quite impressive that a studio produced such an unusual film, with Bong insisting on having creative control over the final edit. The result certainly feels unique and extraordinary.

Having secured the final cut rights, Bong Joon-ho and his team now have ample time to fine-tune every detail of their film to match Bong Joon-ho’s exacting standards, resulting in a faithful adaptation of Edward Ashton’s intricate source material that further solidifies the director’s reputation for crafting exceptional character-driven masterpieces.
