As a long-time fan of Bong Joon-ho’s work, I can hardly contain my excitement for his upcoming film, “Mickey 17.” Having followed his career since the days of “Memories of Murder” and “The Host,” it’s fascinating to see how he’s grown as a director, taking on more ambitious projects like “Snowpiercer,” “Okja,” and now, this space-age clone saga.
Regardless of repeated delays in its release date, Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming movie titled Mickey 17 is still generating significant excitement. The film is adapted from the novel Mickey7, and it follows the life of an expendable employee named Mickey (Robert Pattinson)). In this story, whenever he perishes during an expedition, a duplicate of him is created with many memories retained. However, complications arise when a supposedly deceased Mickey clone resurfaces at the base, while another clone has already been fabricated. The initial trailer for the film hints at the turmoil that unfolds as the two Mickeys meet.
Currently, ScreenRant has unveiled a fresh image from the upcoming movie as part of their 2025 Movie Preview. Bong Joon-ho, an acclaimed director, has garnered significant attention, particularly following the success of his 2019 film “Parasite”, which became the first non-English speaking film to win the Oscar for Best Picture and Best International Feature. This upcoming project, titled “Mickey 17“, marks Bong’s first feature film since his Oscar victories, making it all the more intriguing.
In addition to Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson is joined by Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, and others in a star-studded cast. Unlike the more locally produced Parasite (filmed in Seoul), Mickey 17 appears to be a much larger-scale project. Yet, Bong Joon-ho is not new to blockbuster filmmaking; he’s already directed two English films previously.
Bong Joon-ho’s English Language Features Prepared Him for ‘Mickey 17’
After the success of films like “Parasite”, “Memories of Murder”, “The Host”, and “Mother”, director Bong Joon-ho also directed two English language productions prior to these. One was “Snowpiercer”, which is a movie adaptation of a graphic novel, and it features stars such as Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, and Tilda Swinton. This film showcases stunning visual effects, well-executed action sequences, and a lot of post-apocalyptic sci-fi storytelling that delves into themes related to class and social hierarchy.
The second movie, titled “Okja,” distributed by Netflix, boasted a blend of South Korean and American actors and continued some of the science fiction action-adventure themes seen in “Snowpiercer.” Notably, this film focused on a massive CGI pig, demonstrating that Bong Joon-ho isn’t unfamiliar with larger budgets and more visually effect-centric narratives. With “Mickey 17” being set in space and involving clones of Robert Pattinson, it appears that the director of “Parasite” hasn’t ventured too far from his past filmmaking style.
In essence, “Mickey 17” appears to encapsulate Bong Joon-ho’s past cinematic endeavors. The filmmaker has demonstrated his proficiency in the science fiction genre, whether in large or small productions. His upcoming movie seems poised to explore similar socio-political themes as “Parasite,” but on a grander, more expansive scale. Additionally, with the announcement of its release in premium large format cinemas such as IMAX, it’s evident that Bong Joon-ho aims to present an epic and ambitious sci-fi narrative that is not to be overlooked.
