The rapidly expanding fan base of filmmaker Bong Joon-ho eagerly anticipates the theater debut of his upcoming movie, “Mickey 17,” set for March 7 following a year’s worth of postponements. In this film, Mickey signs up to become a disposable on an interstellar mission aimed at colonizing a new planet. The movie appears to combine Bong Joon-ho’s signature thought-provoking narratives, as seen in “Parasite” and “Memories of Murder,” with his more unconventional style, last showcased through the release of “Snowpiercer” in 2013. Preliminary reviews for the movie have already been released online, following multiple premieres and film festival appearances. Remarkably, “Mickey 17” has already made an unusual mark on Rotten Tomatoes.
Initially, when the first reviews for “Mickey 17” came out, it had a decent-yet-unspectacular 76% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Typically, a film’s RT score decreases as more reviews are added. However, “Mickey 17” has bucked this trend, with its RT rating skyrocketing in the recent past. Currently, it boasts an impressive 86% rating based on 28 reviews submitted so far. This number may fluctuate over the coming weeks as additional reviews pour in to the aggregator site. Whether “Mickey 17” will maintain this high score or see a sudden drop remains to be seen.
In addition to Robert Pattinson, the cast of Mickey 17 includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. This film is adapted from the novel “Mickey7” by Ashton Edwards, with a plot revolving around several incarnations of Robert Pattinson navigating the perilous process of colonization. The storyline can be summarized as follows:
Official synopsis: In a desolate and unforgiving planet, Mickey7 (played by Robert Pattinson) is an everyman who has been tasked with surviving the treacherous conditions in order to aid the colonization efforts. However, his unique genetic abilities have resulted in multiple versions of himself being created, each with their own set of skills and experiences. As the story unfolds, Mickey7 must navigate through various challenges while trying to uncover the truth behind the mysterious planet and its potential for human habitation.
An employee temporarily assigned for the mission is selected for a journey to colonize the icy planet Niflheim. Upon one crew member’s demise, a replacement is created, retaining many of the original’s memories.
What Critics Are Saying About ‘Mickey 17’
As a cinephile, I must confess that while Mickey 17 doesn’t quite scale the cinematic peaks reached by Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning masterpiece Parasite (2019), it undeniably offers another compelling display of Bong Joon-Ho’s directorial prowess. As Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie Couple’s critic, puts it, this is the director’s most audacious and eccentric foray into dark comedy yet. It delves deeper into themes such as capitalism, corruption, colonization, and greed. However, I must concur with her observation that the film’s climax, despite being a powerful part of the movie, seems to pale in comparison to the rest of the narrative.
Serena Seghedoni from Loud and Clear Reviews found that while the movie “Mickey 17” boasts many impressive aspects, these elements don’t effectively come together to create an outstanding film. However, it’s worth watching for its intriguing premise, strong performances, and technical proficiency. Despite the lack of thematic unity, these elements combine to make for a compelling and entertaining story. Nevertheless, not everyone believes “Mickey 17” falls short in comparison to “Parasite”. Andrew J. Salazer from Discussing Film compared the two films in his review, stating that like “Parasite”, “Mickey 17” delivers powerful commentary on its subject matter.
If Parasite critiques capitalism as the foundation of classism and social disparity, then Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 offers a humorous yet thought-provoking exploration of a world in which unchecked capitalist ambition has drained people of their very essence.
