Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King Adaptation ‘Life of Chuck’ Lands at Neon

As a devoted cinephile with a penchant for all things Stephen King and Mike Flanagan, I am absolutely thrilled to hear that Neon will be distributing the adaptation of King’s Novella, “The Life of Chuck.” Having been captivated by Flanagan’s previous adaptations, particularly in the horror genre, I am intrigued by the comparisons drawn to Frank Darabont’s “Shawshank Redemption,” a masterpiece that holds a special place in my heart.

Mike Flanagan‘s adaptation of the Stephen King Novella The Life of Chuck has landed distribution.

The movie that triumphed with the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival is set to be unveiled by Neon. This anthology film, divided into three segments, delves into the life of Charles Krantz (portrayed by Tom Hiddleston), exploring both his inner and outer worlds. Alongside Hiddleston, Karen Gillan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mark Hamill also lend their talents to the film.

In a different take, Flanagan’s work on adapting King stories, particularly those in the horror genre, is distinct. However, his creation, The Life of Chuck, bears stronger resemblances to Frank Darabont’s Shawshank Redemption.

Speaking to THR prior to TIFF, Flanagan shared his experience communicating with King before filming “The Life of Chuck”. He mentioned that King has a great deal of input on aspects like casting and other details before production. However, once the movie begins, King prefers to keep his distance. According to him, “The movie is yours, and the book is mine” is King’s stance.

The review of the movie THR published states: “It’s not surprising that Stephen King enthusiast Mike Flanagan, who has previously adapted Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep successfully for the cinema, finds himself drawn to The Life of Chuck. However, this particular adaptation seems less conventional and somewhat unusual compared to his previous works.

Additionally on Neon’s lineup is the Cannes-winning film “Anora” and Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story titled “Presence”. Notably, they have also recently unveiled the horror-thriller “Longlegs”, which has earned over $100 million at box offices worldwide.
