As a long-time horror fan and avid gamer, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia hearing that Mike Flanagan’s masterpiece, “Hush,” is finally making its way back to digital platforms for fans to enjoy. I remember first watching this atmospheric home invasion thriller when it premiered on Netflix in 2016, and I was immediately captivated by the tense and suspenseful storyline, as well as the exceptional performances from the talented cast.
Prior to gaining widespread acclaim in the horror genre for his notable works like “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Midnight Mass,” and “The Fall of The House of Usher,” filmmaker Mike Flanagan is known to have directed one of his finest films: the chilling home invasion thriller “Hush.” Debuting on Netflix in 2016, this suspenseful production quickly garnered praise from both audiences and critics during a period when Blumhouse was creating some truly exceptional and distinctive horror movies (“Creep,” for instance). Regrettably, since 2023, the film has been absent from digital platforms. However, that’s all about to change.
According to a press announcement issued today, Mike Flanagan’s film “HUSH” will be released for rental or purchase on all significant digital entertainment platforms in the US and Canada starting August 27, 2024. This collaboration between Shout! Studios, Intrepid Pictures, Blumhouse, and Flanagan himself is an exciting development for fans, as the director expresses his delight that “HUSH” (previously released in 2016) will once again be accessible to viewers.
“I hold a special place in my heart for the project HUSH. I’m thrilled that it will find a new home with Shout! Studios, where I believe it will be well cared for. I’m excited that audiences will soon be able to rent or buy the film digitally. Shout! has always been passionate about their titles, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next. HUSH fans are going to have a lot to look forward to!”
Featuring actors such as Kate Siegel (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass), John Gallagher Jr. (The Newsroom, 10 Cloverfield Lane), Samantha Sloyan (Midnight Mass, Grey’s Anatomy), and Michael Trucco (Battlestar Galactica, The Fall of the House of Usher), HUSH revolves around a secluded deaf writer who has chosen to live in the forest. Her tranquil existence is disrupted when an unfamiliar figure wearing a mask emerges at her window, forcing her into a battle for survival without the ability to make noise. With a remarkable 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this film was highly acclaimed upon release by renowned horror author Stephen King, who drew parallels between it and horror classics like Halloween by John Carpenter.
HUSH Is Still Not Available in Physical Form…Yet
Fans may soon rejoice over the availability of “HUSH” on physical media, a development that director Mike Flanagan has been hinting at for some time. Previously exclusive to Netflix since its lease in 2016, the film was removed from the platform in 2023 after Flanagan regained the rights due to Netflix’s policy of only offering select titles permanently.
At the ATX Television Festival in Austin this year, Flanagan expressed his fondness for physical media but revealed he’s spent the past year creating an exciting new release of “Hush” for fans. Those who haven’t been able to acquire a copy will find it worthwhile, he assured.
As someone who deeply cherishes the tactile experience of owning physical media, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when I realized that Netflix doesn’t align with my preference. Their business model revolves around streaming content online, making it impossible for me to keep our recent purchase.
If you’ve been unable to find Hush, don’t worry, it will return soon. It will be widely available for streaming and collection. The wait will be worthwhile as we have added some fantastic new features to it.
Flanagan has a full plate these days with numerous projects underway. He’s currently rejoicing in the digital launch of “HUSH” and is heavily engrossed in post-production for the Stephen King adaptation, “The Life of Chuck“. Furthermore, he will be assuming control over the “The Exorcist” franchise from Blumhouse, taking over following David Gordon Green’s departure in 2023.
Excitedly waiting for the physical copy of HUSH to drop? Fret not, fellow gamers! While we’re all on tenterhooks for updates, we can look forward to its digital version hitting the shelves as early as August 27, 2024. Rent or buy it digitally and satiate your gaming cravings!
