For long-term fans of the original NCIS, you’ll recall that Mike Franks, portrayed by Muse Watson, met his end at the hands of Jonas Cobb (a.k.a. the Port-to-Port Killer) in Season 8’s “Swan Song”. However, the current series NCIS: Origins, airing on the 2025 TV schedule, delves into the past by exploring Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early years with NIS. In an interview with TopMob, Kyle Schmid, who plays the younger Franks, revealed some key aspects of his character he hopes the prequel will focus on. This insight may encourage the production of Origins Season 2.
Following our conversation about the “Monsoon” episode of NCIS: Origins, which depicted flashbacks of Frank’s life in 1982 and a significant strain on his relationship with Tish, I inquired if there was a key moment in Frank’s past from NCIS that Schmid is eager to delve into further in Origins (which requires a Paramount+ subscription to watch). In response, he shared:
Mike has a child now, which fills me with anticipation for his future journey. It seems that Mike would make an excellent father, given his strong character. Although he can be tough, we witness his deep affection for his team and family, particularly Tish. I’m intrigued to learn more about the genesis of his family and where this journey takes him, as well as who might capture his heart next. I’m eager to follow how someone like Mike navigates the world of opening up to love once more.
More NCIS: Origins Stories

In a captivating twist, the origins of NCIS were recently unraveled while delving into an emotional past, yet the latest developments regarding Gibbs and Lala have left me puzzled.
Origins hinted at an exciting development for characters Gibbs and Randy. I’m already looking forward to seeing how this significant event will be portrayed in the series.
In Season 4 of NCIS, character Mike Franks’ son, Liam O’Neill, was introduced in the episode titled “Iceman.” Unfortunately, Liam didn’t survive for long. It was revealed that Franks and Liam’s mother, Mary O’Neill, were in a relationship back in 1982, but Franks left her after just six months without realizing she was pregnant. Much like his father, Liam chose to join the Marines. While serving in Afghanistan, he met a woman named Leyla Shakarji and started a family with her; they had a daughter named Amira. Later on, Liam reached out to Franks for assistance in helping Leyla and Amira escape Afghanistan. During this short reunion, Franks and Liam became acquainted before tragedy struck, taking Liam’s life.
Based on the initial “Monsoon” flashbacks showing Mike Franks abandoning a woman, who is presumably Liam’s mother, to transport drugs to California, it seems plausible that this female character could be Liam’s mom. I’m eagerly anticipating how NCIS: Origins might portray Franks learning about his paternity, possibly with Mary O’Neill reappearing to inform him about Liam, who would have been 10 years old in 1992. The challenge lies in determining whether this backstory will contradict any established elements from NCIS, such as Franks’ relationship with Jackson Gibbs. Nevertheless, I’d be interested to see how the second season handles this development.
Speaking as a film enthusiast, I’m equally intrigued about the love life of Mike Franks following the events of “Monsoon,” given that Tish and he appear to have parted ways (though I can’t help but hope they might rekindle their relationship). Moreover, I’m excited to witness the evolution of Kyle Schmid’s character’s bond with Gibbs, portrayed by Austin Stowell in this series. He shared with me that he looks forward to exploring their relationship more deeply.
There are many untold tales between Frank and Gibbs, and I’m thrilled to witness their journey together on the road. I’m eagerly anticipating the special moments they’ll share, deepening their strong bond, much like the intricate parts of a wheel that come together to make a whole.
In the next five episodes of NCIS: Origins Season 1, we’ll find out if there will be a Season 2 or not. Until then, I’m excited to see more of Mike Franks and Gibbs’ mentor-mentee dynamic, and watch their bond grow closer to the relationship they had on NCIS. The series airs episodes at 10 pm ET on CBS.
